[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 3 Introduction As a professional counselor in training, my life experiences along with the insight gained provided value in the midst of adversity. I find that it has contributed to my development in counseling, such as understanding how experiences contribute to a person’s development, and offering positive regard. I also place an immense value on my professional experiences as a Life Coach specializing for the last 5 years. It has helped me grasp a better understanding for the population I intend to serve as a counselor, which is women who are seeking healing from their childhood trauma. My professional experience along with my life experience inevitably contributed to me reaching a decision in regards to what type of counseling I would like to offer. When choosing the profession of counseling I took into consideration my passion to help others navigate life struggles, my authenticity, as well as my desire to change the narrative in some cultures that counseling services are not needed, and deemed as a hoax. In order to bridge the gap of who you were and who you are to become who you are destined to be it requires processing your experiences, learning from them, as well as unlearning from them. Helping people understand their value in the midst of trauma as opposed to their trauma defining them will create generational healing, in essence is my purpose for entering the role of a professional counselor. This is a professional fit for me as I have the natural ability to connect with anyone despite their background and ensure they feel seen, heard, and validated. People who are seeking to make changes in their life will be met with positive regard, authenticity, and understanding to foster the self-worth and motivation needed to achieve their goals. B The birth of the professional counseling took place in the late 1800s and early 1900s in the United States(source). According to several historians the date is placed as

[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 4 1913 founded by a small group of social workers(Aubrey,1977; Pope,2000). Among the multitude of historical monuments that transpired in the counseling profession I value the 1980s. In 1981 The Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) was birthed by APGA (Sangganjanavanich & Reynolds, 2015). The CACREP was established to help refine and standardize counselor education programs(source). “Many states have moved toward requiring coursework that aligns with the CACREP. The creation of the CACREP organization is very relevant to how I see myself as a counselor in training. As it enhances my skills as a professional counselor beyond just desire and passion to a trained expert. Attending an accredited institution decreases any confusion related to counselor’s professional identity (Sangganjanavanich & Reynolds, 2015). In 1985 the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) was formed. The CSI is a international counseling honor society that promotes academic and professional excellence through a strong counselor identifying among counseling students and professionals who contribute to healthy society by fostering wellness and human dignity” (Sangganjanavanich & Reynolds, 2015). To ensure the mission is accomplished scholarships are promoted, research, professionalism, leadership, and excellence in counseling. The CSI society influences who I am as a counselor in training as it provides an opportunity to receive mentorship, network with national leaders in the profession, access to meetings and trainings held at the ACA Conference. Being apart of the society enhances my training as a counselor ensuring that I’m able to confidently and ethically support clients needs.
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 5 Philosophy of Counseling:A The reason I have chosen the route of a professional counselor as opposed to another profession, such as Social Worker is that my personal philosophy is rooted in empowerment and growth with the intentions of providing group, family, and individual therapy to help achieve mental health, and trauma rooted goals. Hansen (2003) echoed that the identity of the counseling profession is rooted in humanism and human development. Kelly (1995) described counselors as valuing humanistic empowerment in relation to personal development. Both Hansen and Kelly’s insight on the counseling profession indicating that the humanistic approach requires empowerment and growth. Where as social workers identities are aligned with contextual and social factors which differ from my personal identity. B In the ACA Code of Ethics section A it outlines my counseling relationship. Furthermore A.2.c Developmental and Cultural Sensitivity outlines how counselors communicate information culturally and developmentally appropriate( ACA,2014). This code also highlights how to navigate through cultural implications. This code aligns with my identity of understanding the scope of both my role and practice. In the ACA Code of Ethics the Preamble highlights the fundamental principles of professional ethical behavior autonomy, nonmaleficnce, beneficence, Justice, Fidelity, and Veracity(ACA,2014). Each principle aligns with my professional identity and incorporating the ethics that derive from these principles will be second nature. This will allow me to better asses when a ethical dilemma arises as well as identify the need for reflection.
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 6 Focus Area: A According to the Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council it is required that I obtain a masters degree in counseling or a counseling related field from an CACREP accredited institution. In addition to the coursework Texas requires the completion of a supervised practicum experience also referenced as internship. The internship should consist of at least 300 hours, with a minimum of 100 direct client contact hours. Texas also requires a completion of 3,000 supervision hours within a 18 month timeframe. At least 1,500 hours must be of client contact under direction of an approved supervisor. The role of the supervisor is guide, mentor, and meet weekly with the counselor in training. In order to be eligible to be a a Licensed Professional Counselor you must first hold an associate license. Followed by taking and passing the National Counselor Examination(NCE) or the National Clinical Mental Health Counseling Examination (NCMHCE). The NCE is a 200 question multiple choice examination administered by the National Board for Certified Counselors assessing one’s knowledge, skills, and abilities in effective counseling services. The NCMHCE is also designed to asses knowledge, skills, and abilities determined to be important for providing effective counseling services. Texas also requires the Texas Jurisprudence Exam, which is a no fail assessment designed to demonstrate familiarity with Texas State State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors rules. The exam is available online through the Boards website.Upon holding an associate license and completing supervised training

[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 7 under a board approved supervisor you are eligible to apply for an “upgrade “.In addition to the exams Texas requires fingerprinting, and drug testing. My specialty area that intend to focus on is Marriage and Family therapy The Texas State Board of Examiners requires that a graduate degree in Marriage and Family Therapy or related field from an accredited institution is required. Along with passing the national licensing exam administered by the Association of Marital and Family Therapy Regulatory Boards (AAMFTRB). Obtaining the LMFT Associate license allows you to accrue the supervised clinical experience necessary to be eligible for full licensing. The Texas Jurisprudence Examination is an additional requirement. Eligibility to be a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist requires 1,500 or more hours of supervised direct counseling with 500 of those hours being with family or couples. 3,000 or more total hours of supervised both direct and indirect, 200 hours of direct supervision, 100 of those hours must be individual. Hours are required to be complete no less than 24 months and no more than 72 months. Upon completing all requirements you are eligible to apply for an “upgrade” to become fully licensed. [Heading 3] My professional abilities are aligned with my intended licensing goal as I have been a certified Life Coach specializing in trauma working with women and families the past 5 years. I have had the opportunity to gain experience, knowledge, skills, and understanding helping individuals and families navigate through adversity. Continuing this route will enhance my skills as a counselor in training as well as prepare me for the professional expectations needed when undergoing my supervised hours.
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 8 [Heading 4]. A counseling organization that is specific to my intended specialty focus is the International Association of Marriage and Family Counselors(IAMFC). This is the division of the American Counseling Association designed for members to help develop healthy family systems through prevention, education and therapy(source). In addition to the IAMFC, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) have several advocacy efforts at state and federal levels (Sangganjanavanich & Reynolds, 2015). Membership in both organizations allow opportunities for educational growth, support, visibility, access to conferences, as well as professional advocacy (Sangganjanavanich & Reynolds, 2015).The benefits will be an assist to me as it will enhance my skills along my journey as a counselor in training, even well into my career as a licensed counselor. When working in the specialty area of Marriage and Family therapy there are a few ethical codes to consider. ACA Code of Ethics B.4.b Couples and Family Counseling highlights the role of the counselor to clearly define who is considered the “client”. As well as discuss expectations and limitations of confidentiality. I find that this is an essential ethical code to adhere to in identifying who specifically is the client as MFT often involves group therapy. Another ethical code to consider is B.4.a Group Work, which highlights the importance and parameters of counselors explaining confidentiality for the specific group.(ACA,2014). Both codes are essential to adhere to as they ensure I’m providing not only effective counseling services but ethical counseling services as well.
[SHORTENED TITLE UP TO 50 CHARACTERS] 9 [Heading 5]. The important personal strengths that I bring to the counseling profession are authenticity, discernment, and empathy. My authenticity skill allows me to create an atmosphere among my clients that allows them to see me beyond the light of a counselor, yet a human too. Creating this type of atmosphere allows clients to become more transparent during our experience. My skill of discernment allows me to decipher what clients are not disclosing. Lastly the skill of empathy allows clients to feel validated in their experiences while displaying my dedication to the clients growth and development. An area of growth for me as a counselor in training is boundaries. In my experience as a Life Coach I have created an unhealthy habit of taking clients problems, traumas, and burdens home with me. It is imperative that I master the skill of boundaries within myself to ensure I’m creating a healthy work life balance. Another area of growth is allowing clients to find their own solutions oppose to finding the solution for them. Failure to do so can create co-dependency in clients instilling uncertainty into them that leads to the inability to make decisions without the suggestion from a counselor and or another person. I have created a SMART goal that is related to my career and educational goals. I intend to be a licensed counselor, owning my own practice that originated from my Life Coaching business, selling out area as on a trauma healing tour, while promoting my New York Times Best Seller Self-Help book in 4 years. My intent to complete these goals within the 4 year time frame is due to my desire to heal the world one woman at a time, the progression of my current business, as well as ensuring I meet the time line of my next SMART goal.
