Rob Haas IFT 488 Lab 4 – Remote GUI Applications 07/17/2023 Prof Lauer Lab 4 – Remote GUI Applications 1) Comparison of all three applications (review) TeamViewer: TeamViewer is a great GUI application that enables you to use Remote Desktop Protocol on any device that has TeamViewer installed on it. In fact, it is one of the first programs that allowed and enabled you to join to another computer. One of the key factors using TeamViewer is that we can utilize it to make as a screen-sharing solution when we want to display information from our devices and broadcast it to another user’s computer. Utilizing this has made it easier on a professional level because it allows us to have the installation from a remote location and can screen share to another user in another country. While there are other systems that have similar features and attributes, TeamViewer ensures the operation's overall security, all will being able to scale the load that makes it easier for your Remote Desktop Protocol to not be disrupted. Xpra: Xpra is a very helpful and resourceful application that allows you run N programs, mostly on a remote host, having the ability to then direct their display to your local system. The best part about Xpra unlike most, is that you can even disconnect from these programs and reconnect from the same or a different machine without losing any state. Xpra’s applications are forwarded and appear on your desktop managed by your Windows Manager. How it differs from standard forwarding and remote display technologies, Xpra can run rootless, unlike very similar remote display technologies. Xpra uses a unique protocol that is self-tuning, comparatively

X2Go: X2Go, an open-source remote desktop program, uses a modified NX3 protocol, which is available to Linux users. A Linux system's graphical user interface can be accessed remotely with X2Go, but it can also be used to access Windows computers using/through a proxy. When doing so, you would be connecting through what is called the X2Go Client. This portal allows you to connect from your Linux computer to any Windows or Mac OS computer. When connecting from a Linux-to-Linux device, it would be acting as a X2Go Server when both computers want/need to be linked. One of the two best features of this application is the ability to connect and using the GRD that works well in both low and high bandwidth. Another is the same as Xpra, in which you can disconnect and reconnect a session. 2) Statement declaring favorite/least favorite and why? Each one can make a claim for which would be my favorite, however, I think personally I must go with X2Go as the one that is my favorite. I am more on the side of things that are much more secure aspect of things and X2Go is in my opinion much more secure. With an improved integration of SSH and not needing a special proxy user, X2Go seems like it’s a step above the other two. It was an easy installation and didn’t need multiple packages to install the server and client. By far, very simple and easy to use and understand. I am really fascinated in learning more about this and using it frequently.

TeamViewer is free for personal use, however, TeamViewer doesn’t provide the same level of reliability and responsiveness as it does for the paid subscriptions. TeamViewer has the following subscriptions with pricing: $50/user/month for Remote Lite Support, $64.90/user/month for Remote Support Pro. b) Licensing: All provide licensing; however, TeamViewer has the paid subscriptions as stated above for the licensing of those plans. c) Number of concurring connections allowed: Multiple connections with Xpra and TeamViewer are available. X2Go can have a single server with multiple users/connections to that server. d) Supported platforms: X2Go: Windows, Mac and Linux Xpra: Windows, Linux, Mac TeamViewer: Windows XP/Vista/7/8/10, Linux, Mac e) Best usage are/situation: TeamViewer best used in situations when security is paramount. The x2goclient application provides you the possibility to access the remote running desktop, exchange files with it and redirect sound from the session on the server to your local client. x2goclient can be started via the Desktop Environment's application menu (section: Internet) or by

Rob Haas IFT 488 Lab 4 – Remote GUI Applications 07/17/2023 Prof Lauer using the command line in a shell. Xpra is usable over reasonably slow links and does its best to adapt to changing network bandwidth limits. f) File transfer capability and process of do so: All three have the capability to initiate and successfully complete a file transfer. g) Encryption: TeamViewer transmission is encrypted with AES (256-bit) session encryption and RSA public/private key exchange. With Xpra, sessions can be accessed over SSH, or password protected over plain TCP sockets which makes it encrypted. The X2Go server to client is encrypted and secure as well through SSH. h) Installation problems: I had no issues installing any of these GUI applications! Images to show remote accessibility: TeamViewer (Remote Connection was successful)
