Emily Donahue December 3, 2023 SCI-310 6-2 Journal Module five introduced several important concepts about cartography. The most important concept to me was exploring how symbology and color can affect a map. These elements can alter how effective the map is at conveying the data. It is important to choose symbols and colors that are representative of the data to create an accurate map. The exercises in milestone five prepared me to create an aesthetically pleasing and geographically accurate map for the final. The concept I struggled with this week was navigating ArcMap. I do not have much experience with this software, and I was not sure where to start with milestone four. It took a lot of research and a few hours of trial and error to get started. I did not feel confident in the final product of my milestone, so I will be trying to get more comfortable with ArcMap to make the final project easier for myself. I do not think there is any specific assistance that I need from the instructor at this time. I will apply what I learned in this module to my final project to create an insightful and accurate map. The readings, resources, and milestones have shown me the importance of choosing map elements that best represent the dataset. This will help me as I work to develop an in-depth cartographic report. I am trying to stay on top of my final project by applying geostatistical concepts and practices to the report each week as I am learning them. This allows me to gradually improve upon my analysis as I progress through the course.
