25.Click on the Processes tab to see everything that is loaded in RAM. Choose View, Select Columns, and tick Memory – Working Set, and Memory – Paged Pool and click OK. You may have to widen the Task Manager window to see the additional column. Memory – Working Set shows how much memory each process is taking up in RAM, and Memory – Paged Pool shows how much is parked in the Page File on the hard disk. Click on the Memory – Working Set heading to sort the column until you can see which process is taking up the most memory. Which is it, and how many Kb is it taking up? Directions: 1. Insert the Linux DVD in the drive. Restart the PC and press F2 to enter the Setup. Choose Boot Sequence to change the Boot order of the PC to look at the DVD first. 2. Start the PC and choose to boot from the CD/DVD and continue 3. Note the choices (eventually)– Try Ubuntu or Install Ubuntu. We choose to Try so that Windows 10 remains unaffected on the computer 4. Note that the administrator of the computer is called a superuser in Linux. When operating in Linux you will do so as an ordinary user, but can change to the superuser when required by typing the word “sudo” without the quotes When Linux has loaded, investigate the desktop to see what everything does and where it is located. As with Windows there are two ways of operating – the graphical interface and the command line. We will explore files and folders using the command line. 5. Click the Search button in the top left-hand corner of the Desktop. Type Terminal and open the command line. Use the pwd command (print working directory) to display the full path to the current directory which should be something like /home/yourname 6. 8. Use the ls -l command (long format) to display the results using the long format. This will tell you the attributes (read/write etc. permissions), links (like Windows shortcuts), owners and size, date, and name 9. Use the cd .. command again to move up to the root directory which is indicated by a forward slash. The ls –l command lists everything in the root directory 10. The vi editor (visual editor) is a text editor that works in command mode to create text files or scripts. Let us create a text file called mymemo 11. If you are not already in your home directory, use the cd command to go there by typing cd /home/ 12. To open the vi editor and create a new file, enter the command vi mymemo 13. Type in a couple of lines of text and press: wq to save the file after first pressing Escape. Note that you will be unable to save if you are running Linux from the DVD 14. Exit the Terminal by clicking the Close button in the top left corner of the program Now we will use the graphical interface – 15. Create a desktop icon for the Terminal program usually by dragging the icon onto the Desktop 16. Open the file manager and add a new folder called Downloads under the Music folder 17. Open the word processor and type the heading Weekly Roster for Cleaning. Insert a 5 column, 5 row table. Type the days of the week for headings and write six different names in the table so that four employees are rostered on for each day. Save the document as Weekly Roster in the latest Word file format in the Documents folder 18. Listed below are some of the standard tests that are included with Linux. 23. If you are running Linux from a DVD you will not be able to run these tests, but it is useful to know that they are available. A few Ubuntu Linux Tests Memory Check ( Memtest86+) This is an inbuilt memory checking tool for Ubuntu Linux. To start the Memtest86+: 1. Restart your machine. During the restart process, press and hold the SHIFT key at the boot screen. 2. You end up on the Grub screen, where you’ll see memtest86+. 3. Navigate using the arrow keys to memtest86+ and press Enter . The serial console option is for Remote Access. 4. The RAM test process will take a few minutes to complete. Hard Drive Check Ubuntu has an inbuilt S.M.A.R.T. utility to deliver the hard drive information to you. To access the utility: 1. Click the Ubuntu button and type Disk . 2. In the Disk utility, select your hard drive in the left pane. 3. Click the button (having 3 horizontal lines) in the top right corner of the Disk utility. Click SMART Data & Self-Tests . You can also press CTRL+S to access the same (you need to be on the Disk Utility). Checkbox If you have Ubuntu installed on your machine, then an inbuilt tool Checkbox does the job of finding hardware errors in different components of your machine.
