1 Learning Strategies and Learning Styles Incorporating Online College Courses Domonique Foggie East Gateway Community College CSS 106: Succeeding in College Professor: Mary Gallegos February 11, 2024
2 Learning Strategies and Learning Style Written Assignment Q1. Biggest areas of concern I have several concerns about learning through online college courses. My first concern is lack of interaction because usually these courses lack the level of interaction found in traditional classroom setting. This can lead to feeling of isolation and make it challenging to engage with course material deeply. Another big concern is balancing coursework with other responsibilities that can be challenging in an online learning environment. Without the fixed schedule of traditional classes, I find it difficult to manage my time effectively. Online learning need self-motivation and discipline, in this regard I have to struggle to be on track with assignment and studying. It is also sometimes very frustrating when there is internet connectivity issues or, software glitches, or hardware malfunction that can disrupt the learning process (Neendoor, 2023) . Another of my concern is that as beneficial as internet can be for educational pursuit, but sometimes it present numerous distractions. The constant influx of notifications from blogs, videos, and social media platforms divert my concentration from my online classes and divert my attention from my coursework and responsibilities. Sometimes these notifications make me mindlessly scroll through these platforms instead of focusing on my studies. Q2: Favored Learning Style The different ways people select to learn and practice information are known as learning styles. These styles are often categorized into different modalities such as visual, aural, kinesthetic, or a blend of these (Team, 2022) . Visual learners prefer learning through visual aids such as diagrams, charts, graphs, and video. Auditory students prefer learning through listening
3 like addresses, debates, pod casts, besides audiobooks. Kinesthetic or tactile learners study best through hands-on activities and experiences, prefer to engage with material physically, through activities like experiments, role-playing, and interactive simulations. My preferred learning style is kinesthetic methods where I like to process information through physical activity as I like to prefer interactive, tactile educational materials that let me connect with tools and mechanisms and my second preference is through visual aids like diagrams and charts. Kinesthetic and visual learning strategies make me engage with hands-on activities and visual aids. I like to manipulate with objects, perform experiments, or create diagrams and charts to understand concepts. I benefit from this interactive experiences that allows me physically engage with material, enhancing comprehension and retention through movement and imagery. As of my learning style of being visual it provide me a wealth of visual materials, such as videos, diagrams, slide shows, and interactive simulations. I like to watch demonstrations, view graphs or charts, and engage with multimedia content. I like to learn by engaging in physical activities which sometimes pose challenges for my type of learner, because online learning is static usually and I feel restless because of sitting for hours for my lectures. To solve this problem, I plan taking lectures in short blocks and take breaks and pace around for few minutes and then continued the studies again. Online studies help me in offering opportunities for group projects, discussions, and providing real-world applications that help me in getting knowledge in practical ways. Question 3: Strategies to talk my concerns To discourse my concerns and to get maximum from my favored learning style, I plan out for some learning strategies including, visual aids consisting of diagrams, charts, graphs, and videos to represent information visually, create visual diagrams or mind maps to organize and

4 connect related concepts. I also plan to use storytelling techniques with visual elements to convey complex concepts. Also creating visually appealing slide presentations with concise bullet points and relevant images. I also plan to use hands-on activities to experiment, simulation, and role playing exercises. I also want to plan movement breaks for physical movement or stretching to keep me engaged and focus to my assignments. By using physical objects or manipulatives to represent abstract concepts to touch and interact with them. I also like to plan collaborative project, group discussions, or problem-solving activities that involve physical interaction. Effective learning strategies can mitigate common challenges in online college courses. They prioritize time management to balance coursework with other commitments (Davey, 2023) . I can utilize active learning techniques like summarization and self-testing to enhance understanding and retention of material. It would establish a dedicated study environment free from distractions. These effective learning strategies engage with course materials through discussions, forums, and online resources to deepen comprehension. Regular review and adjusting study methods based on performance and feedback. By employing these strategies, I can understand the unique demands of online learning and optimize my academic success. By incorporating kinesthetic and visual strategies into online learning, I can address my concerns such as monotony, lack of engagement, time management, and difficulty grasping abstract concepts. These approaches promote active learning, enhance comprehension, and make the online college experience more interactive and effective (Mcgrath, 2021) . By employing these learning strategies, I can tackle my apprehensions regarding online college classes while catering to my favored learning methods. Leveraging multimedia resources, engaging in online discussions, utilizing various communication tools, breaking down course content into more
5 manageable segments, and establishing structured study routine will enhance my understanding and retention of course materials, leading to success in my online college endeavors.
