Social media and its limitations. Just like every form of technology has its limitations, so does social media. During the Covid-19 pandemic, everyone was using social media. People use platforms such as TikTok, and Facebook to stay connected to family, friends, and others. However, during this time many of us witnessed some of the limitations that come from social media. One of these limitations was discussed in a previous paper. That limitation refers to cyberbullying. The issue with cyberbullying is that it is something that cannot be fully controlled. Since cyberbullying occurs when some posts or sends harassing or embarrassing posts or messages about someone, that is still considered freedom of speech under the first amendment (Maruri, 2022). The only way to fully stop cyberbullying is for the law to be changed so it’s not considered freedom of speech. In the meantime, the users can make sure that nothing about their address or email information is being shared on anything. Since social media is accessed on the internet, that means anything posted becomes public information (Delete Cyberbullying, 2023). Users are also able to block bullies from being able to comment on their posts. Understanding the technology It is easy for people to become addicted to social media and research has proven that it can impact a person's mental health. Research has found that sites like Facebook and Instagram cause an increase of having a high feeling causing people to keep going back to those sites (Jefferson Health, 2022). That high feeling is coming from the dopamine that is coming from visiting those sites. Challenges and Benefits There are several benefits to using social media. As I had mentioned earlier, social media can be used to stay connected to family and friends. It also can be used to share information and
give us a place where we can express ourselves. It also can be used to allow users to get community support during tough situations. These communities are considered networking communities. They are known to "provide available and influential tools to highlight and act on issues and causes that are tremendously important to us” (Reach Out Schools, 2022). These communities assist the youth and those that are younger than this generation with several things such as creating events and different activities. These communities are also good for bringing people together so that they can express their own views and opinions on different topics, causes, and current events. As I mentioned before, when the whole country was on lockdown, people stayed in touch with each other by using social media. Sites like TikTok quickly became used to share important information around the world. The downside to that was some of the things that were shared were not factual and some of it was very biased. Despite the downsides, many people relied heavily on social media to keep informed in real time of what was going on with the pandemic. However, during that same time things like cybercrime were also on the rise. Some of the other challenges that were being seen were the addiction to social media, children not performing well academically, horrible work skills, isolation, and as mentioned above cyberbullying. Strategies for Personal Goals Critically analyzing how much time being spent on social media is a huge benefit. A good way to do that is setting up a set amount of time that will be dedicated to social media, and also making sure that you have daily goals set. If you find that you are missing your daily goals, look at how much time is being spent scrolling through Facebook and TikTok. Sometimes you will see that once the social media time is cut down, then you can be more productive during the day.
