CGS 1871 - Chapter 2 Assignment Part 1: Define the following key terms in your OWN words: 1. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) : A style of coding language that describes what a document is supposed to look like as opposed to HTML, which is the backend of the website design. 2. Sans Serif : A font that means without serifs. 3. Serif : A styling of font that adds small lines to the ends of each character. 4. WYSIWYG : The acronym means “What You See Is What You Get,” and it means you can easily print out what you would like to – such as a word document. 5. Kerning: The space between two individual characters. 6. Generic Font: A list of commonly used fonts, such as serif and sans-serif. 7. Font substitution: Uses a generic font to replace characters that are not recognized. 8. Anti-Aliasing: A form of graphics processing that rids distortions and smooths lines in digital pictures. 9. Pixel: The smallest point of data in an image. 10. x-Height: The distance from the baseline of a character to the top of a lowercase character, example being the bottom the circle in the character “p” and the top of the circle in the character “d.” 11. TrueType: Rendering characters based off of vectors. 12. ASCII: Stands for American Standard Code for Information Exchange and it is used to encode characters. Originally, it contained inputs from the keyboard, but over time it began to grow, adding separate characters. 13. Dots Per Inch (DPI): A measurement of dots that can be placed per inch. A monitor would use PPI, which is pixels per inch. Part 2: Essay Quiz (p. 68). Complete question #5 in 250-300 words.
CGS 1871 - Chapter 2 Assignment Hypermedia is a nonlinear way to display information. This means that you are able to interact with a website using several variations of images, text, video, audio, and hyperlinks. The ability to do this allows you to navigate through a website and better discover what you are looking for. If it were to be a linear structure, it would disallow the user to look for exactly what they need and require for them to sift through an entire website. Due to hyperlinks, all of the information on a specified topic is behind one click, rather than numerous moments of scrolling through a page. An implication may be the time required for the website to open, and another would be the reduction of speed for that website. Furthermore, one may discover that the website would be a bit more complicated, being a spider web of links from one page to another, when all the information they needed could be on one page. The positive side to this, however, is that it would be better organized and more interactive than what it was previously. This would provide a more attractive look to someone who is using the website. For the hand-built system versus the automatic indexing system, it would be best to first define the pros and cons of each. With a hand built system, it would require for you to keep adding more and more on to the structure of your website from the backend, which once completely organized, can prove to be ineffective. With an automatic indexing system, it will maintain said structure and maximize efficiency by reducing the amount of missing procedures.
