Outputs are only as good as Inputs What I found most interesting about the video is that algorithms have the ability to impact people's lives in very real and negative ways. In the cases of the teachers that lost their jobs based on the data that was proven to be inaccurate. Imagining the lasting impact that this had on ether lives was very sobering to me and is making me look at things differently, especially on social media. It made me think a lot about the MCAS tests that at this time are required for graduation in my state and how it pretty much gives a report card to the school as to how they are teaching. Why is it important to maximize the degree to which samples and data used to train or build algorithms are representative of the population? It is important because this data can affect peoples decisions that they make for their lives and also there can be negative impacts on people if this information is used to make decisions that are based on skewed and inaccurate data. If the sample taken to build the algorithm is inaccurate of biased in anyway, then it is not particularly indicative of the whole population. Algorithms are based on popular data that is not necessarily representative of all people and these algorithms can have a large impact on decisions that are made, so it is important that people have accurate data. How can human bias influence data used to test hypotheses? Human bias can influence the data used because the person running the tests may be looking for a certain outcome. If this is the case, they may only use data and samples that will support this outcome. For instance, if a researcher is looking to prove the hypotheses that all children who receive early intervention services before preschool will be better and more successful students. The researcher may only choose a sample to get data from that has a successful student record, while ignoring the students that may struggle and not do as well. They may also choose a group that had only positive experiences with Early Intervention while ignoring those that may not have had good experiences. It is important as a researcher to ensure that there is consideration for sample bias as well as trying to prove the hypotheses without regard to other sample sets. How does the potential for human influences on data selection and interpretation relate to one of the programmatic themes below? You may want to review the Programmatic Themes document. In regards to social justice and and human influences on data interpretation, the accuracy of this data is very important. One point made in the video about a judge making his decision on recidivism and sentencing, it was clear that the judge was using biased data to make his decision on how long a person should be sentenced for a crime. Also, another point in the video was how data was used to show that
certain areas of SES and races had more crime, but this was because the data was only pulled from those areas. If data is not collected without bias, it will be incorrect and it can lead to a continuation of oppression for people that are already oppressed. this bias can lead to a the perpetuation of unjust treatment to those who are already treated unfairly.
