Usability Review of Creative Genius 1 David Awodi CMST 290: Introduction to Interactive Design Project 3 – Spring 2023
Critical Goal The critical goal of Shein website is to sell fashionable and affordable clothing, accessories, and beauty products to customers around the world. Shein aims to provide customers with trendy and high-quality products at competitive prices, making fashion accessible to everyone regardless of their budget. 2
It can overwhelm and confuse users: A crowded design can make it difficult for users to navigate the website, and users may become overwhelmed or confused by the number of products presented on each page. It can lead to decision paralysis: When presented with too many options, users may experience decision paralysis and struggle to make a purchase decision. A crowded design may result in users leaving the website without making a purchase. It can result in a poor user experience: A crowded design can result in a poor user experience, with users struggling to find what they are looking for or becoming frustrated with the cluttered design. This can lead to negative reviews and reduced customer loyalty. It can be less accessible for users with disabilities: A crowded design can be less accessible for users with disabilities, particularly those with visual impairments who may find it challenging to navigate a visually cluttered website. 6 Usability Issue #1 Aesthetic and minimalist design: Crowded Web Page . Severity Rating : Medium . Rationale:

Crowded drop hover menu, almost unreadable Too many sections together that do not necessarily belong together. There is too many pictures that makes the user loose focus. Crowded drop hover menu, almost unreadable 8 Shein dropdown menu categories
Simplify the website layout: Shein could simplify its website layout by reducing the number of elements on each page. For example, it could use more white space, reduce the number of images, and use a clear and consistent font for all text. Use a grid or list view: Shein could offer a grid or list view for its products, allowing users to focus on one product at a time. This would help users avoid feeling overwhelmed by too many products on a single page. Implement a product preview feature: Shein could implement a product preview feature that allows users to see a quick preview of a product without having to click through to the product page. This would allow users to quickly scan through products and identify those that they are interested in. . . 9 Recommendation:
Usability Issue #2 user control and freedom: Lack Of A Go back Option. Severity Rating: Medium Rationale: When users place their order before payment, there is no go back button to the shopping bag. Those are the only options that the users have if they want to go back. 3 Shein checkout page.

To keep users on the website: By not providing a "go back" option, Shein may be trying to keep users on its website for longer periods. This could potentially lead to increased engagement and more opportunities for users to make a purchase. To encourage users to use the search bar: Without a "go back" option, users may be more likely to use the search bar to navigate the website. This could provide Shein with more information about what users are searching for and help the company optimize its website for better user experience. To simplify the website design: Shein may have intentionally designed its website without a "go back" option to simplify the overall design. Providing fewer options for users could potentially make the website easier to navigate. To prevent users from seeing out-of-stock products: Shein frequently updates its product inventory, and a lack of a "go back" option could potentially prevent users from seeing out-of- stock products. This could help the company avoid disappointing customers and reduce the likelihood of negative reviews. 4
Recommendation: Implement a browser "back" button: One of the simplest solutions would be for Shein to allow users to use the browser's "back" button to navigate the website. This would provide users with an easy way to return to the previous page and improve the overall user experience. Provide a breadcrumb trail: A breadcrumb trail is a navigation aid that allows users to see their current location within a website's hierarchy. By providing a breadcrumb trail, Shein could give users a clear path to return to the previous page and help them understand where they are within the website's structure. Add a "previous page" button: Shein could also add a "previous page" button to the website, which would allow users to quickly return to the previous page they were on. This would provide users with an easy-to-use navigational aid that could improve the overall user experience. 5
Usability Issue #3 Navigation Low severity 10 Low severity It prioritize advertisement space over navigation: Shein may have prioritized advertisement space over navigation, which could make it difficult for users to find what they're looking for on the website. It prioritize design over functionality: Shein may have prioritized the design of the website over functionality, which could result in a confusing or cluttered navigation system that is difficult for users to navigate. It prioritize new products over ease of navigation: Shein may prioritize adding new products to the website over ensuring that the navigation system is easy to use and intuitive. This can result in a large and overwhelming inventory of products that is difficult for users to navigate. It prioritize mobile design over desktop navigation: Shein may have prioritized designing the website for mobile devices over desktop navigation, which could result in a suboptimal navigation system for desktop users.

Simplify the menu structure: Shein's menu structure is currently quite complex, with multiple levels of submenus. Simplifying the menu structure and reducing the number of submenus could make it easier for users to navigate the site. Improve the search function: While Shein does have a search bar, the results can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate. Improving the search function to include more relevant results and better filters could make it easier for users to find what they're looking for. Provide clear navigation cues: Shein could provide clearer navigation cues, such as breadcrumbs or a progress bar, to help users understand where they are in the site and how to get back to previous pages. Conduct user testing: Shein could conduct user testing to better understand how users navigate their site and identify any pain points. This could help them make targeted improvements to the site's navigation based on user feedback. Recommendation : 12
To prioritize design over functionality: Shein may believe that having a visually appealing website is more important than fast loading speeds. However, this can lead to a frustrating user experience and drive users away from the website. To prioritize content over speed: Shein may prioritize having a large inventory of products and a large amount of content on its website over optimizing for loading speed. However, this can lead to longer loading times and negatively impact the user experience. To save on hosting costs: Faster loading speeds often require more expensive hosting solutions, and Shein may have chosen to prioritize cost savings over user experience. However, slow loading speeds can negatively impact the company's bottom line by driving users away from the website. To focus on mobile design: Shein may have prioritized mobile design over desktop loading speed, as mobile devices are becoming increasingly popular for online shopping. However, slow loading speeds can negatively impact the user experience on both mobile and desktop devices. Usability Issue #4 Slow Loading Speed Moderate severity 13
Recommendation Optimize images: Large image files can slow down a website's loading speed, so Shein could optimize its images by reducing their file size without sacrificing image quality. This can be achieved through compression tools or by resizing images to fit their display dimensions. Use a content delivery network (CDN): A CDN is a network of servers that can help distribute content across the globe, reducing the time it takes for users to access it. Shein could use a CDN to help speed up the delivery of its website content to users in different locations. Minimize HTTP requests: Each time a web page loads, it sends a series of HTTP requests to the server for various files, such as images, CSS, and JavaScript. Minimizing these requests by reducing the number of files, consolidating them, or using browser caching can help speed up the loading process. Optimize code and scripts: Shein could optimize its website's code and scripts to help reduce load times. This can involve techniques such as minifying, which compresses and removes unnecessary code and whitespace, or deferring non-critical scripts, which allows the website to load first before loading less essential scripts. 14

SUMMARY SHEIN is an affordable online shopping platform, that provide too many different products to the customers. The go back button is a usability issue related to the user control and freedom. Shein website need to allow its customers to go back to their order without loosing the items in the shopping bag. The crowded page is a usability issue related to the Aesthetic and minimalist design. Shein web page is not minimalist, and there are too much information on the home page that may make the user lose focus and prevent them from making purchase easily. Home page icon is a usability issue related to the consistency and standards. Most of Shein pages has no home page standard icon, users must wonder which icon is the right to go back to the home page. Some options such as customer service, currency, and favorites are not labeled in the Shein webpage, which may create a misunderstanding of some actions. 15

PROJECT REFLECTION The challenges that I faced completing this project are: Gain knowledge of usability review and its process, especially if you have no prior experience with usability studies. Understand the necessary steps involved in conducting a usability review. Develop a good grasp of Jakob's 10 Usability Heuristics and their differences. Conduct thorough research of a website to identify any usability issues that need to be addressed. 18
resolved my challenges by: conduct thorough research to understand the meaning of usability review and how to complete a usability study, using course resources and external sources such as YouTube videos. Read through usability studies done by professionals and students to gain further understanding of the topic. Utilize the website https://www.nngroup.com/articles/ten-usability-heuristics/ as a helpful resource for understanding Jakob's 10 Usability Heuristics, as it contains many examples, videos, articles, and images. Look for customer reviews about the website and conduct a deep browse of the website, even using it yourself, to identify any usability issues. 19
