I think you provided great explanations for surrogate keys, natural keys, and star schemas. I am not personally familiar with star schemas- besides what I have learned so far from this discussion forum. However, I am familiar with star topologies in terms of how a network is configured. A star topology provides a central hub that other network devices are connected to. In order to get information from one network device to the other, it must go through the central hub/node. This is great topology to use when you want to centralize network management. However, it is costly in network resources. If this is how a star schema works, I can see how a surrogate key would be extra valuable. The surrogate key would be universal to refer to information no matter what relational structure it is being used on.
