American Literature B | Cornell Notes for MBTI Basics Directions: You will need to click on the link in the assignment. Once you enter that website you will have to click on a few different links found on the “MBTI Basics” page. Use the bold print words below as a guide for what links to click on. You can get back to the “MBTI Basics” page by scrolling back to the top and clicking on the link near the top in the center of the page. As you read through the information on the site, you will be answering some of the questions listed below. You will also see below that sometimes you have information in the “Notes” column, but there is no “Cue” or question. If there is no question, you need to construct a question for the notes listed. Ask yourself, “What question does the provided information answer?” Write that question in the “Cue” column. When you get to the bottom, you will see a “Summary” section. This is a place for you to record a brief recap of the reading, what you learned, or what questions you still have. Cue Notes What is a preference ? What you like or prefer What are some benefits for understanding our preferences? The goal of comprehending types of personality is to recognize individual distinctions. There is no superior type—all kinds are equal. The MBTI test does not assess character, aptitude, or attributes; rather, it ranks people based on their preferences. What does the Extroversion or Introversion preference describe? It describes where a person places his or her attention and gets his or her energy What are some characteristics of the Extroversion preference? • I enjoy participating actively in events and engaging in a wide range of activities to get my energy up. • I enjoy energizing others and being thrilled around others. • I enjoy taking initiative and seeing things through to completion. • In general, I feel comfortable in this world. • When I can discuss a subject aloud and hear other people's perspectives, I frequently grasp it better. © Copyright Michigan Virtual 2019 Revised =lastEdited() Page 1
Cue Notes What characteristics does the introversion preference have? Get energy from ideas, pictures, memories, inner world Prefer doing things alone or with one or two people who they are comfortable with Take time to reflect before reacting Ideas are almost solid things for them What does the Sensing or Intuition preference describe? It describes what a person pays more attention to in order to gather information What are some characteristics of the Sensing preference? • focusing on the physical world—what I can see, hear, touch, taste, and smell. • What is real, present, current, and actual matters to me. • I take note of information and retain specifics that are significant to me. • I prefer to see things used practically, and I learn best when I can put what I'm learning to use. • It's true that actions speak louder than words. What are some characteristics of the Intuition preference? Pay attention to the impressions or meanings of patterns Rather learn by thinking a problem through than solving it with a hands-on approach More interested in the possibilities, so they focus more on the future than the past Like symbols and abstract ideas or concepts Remember impressions of events rather than the actual facts or details of it What does the Thinking or Feeling preference describe? Your preferred method of decision-making is described by the Thinking or Feeling preference. What are some characteristics of the Thinking preference? • I prefer to look for the fundamental truth or concept that should be used while making decisions, regardless of the particular circumstances at hand. • I prefer to weigh the advantages and disadvantages before making a consistent, reasoned decision. • I make an effort to be impersonal, so I refuse to let my own or © Copyright Michigan Virtual 2019 Revised =lastEdited() Page 2
Cue Notes other people's desires affect me. • Neutral What are some characteristics of the Feeling preference? Believe that the best decisions can be made by taking other people’s feelings into consideration Concerned with values and how the decision impacts others Long to maintain harmony Appear caring, warm, and tactful What does the Judging or Perceiving preference describe? Describes how you would like to live your outside life and how you like to structure your environment. What are some characteristics of the Judging preference? • In my outside life, I apply my judging (or thinking) preference while making decisions. • It appears to others that I enjoy a planned or structured lifestyle, that I feel more at ease making decisions, that I like things to be settled and controlled, and that I try to keep life under control. • Internally, I might feel adaptable and receptive to new knowledge, which I actually am. • Judging should not be confused with judgmental in the negative meaning toward individuals or situations. They are not connected. What are some characteristics of the Perceiving preference? Others see them as liking flexibility and spontaneity Others see them as staying open to new things and changes They are motivated by an impending deadline They work in bursts of energy Keep plans to a minimum How are all types equal? Since the test's instrument sorts based on preferences rather than ability, personality, or characteristics, all types are equal. Cue Notes Finding out about the various preferences of personality types was interesting to me. It is intriguing to consider how individuals come to have these kinds of preferences for personalities over the course of their lives. The fact that there are so many people who can differ so greatly is interesting. I do wonder how people come to have such different tastes in personalities. You can actually live the life you desire if you fully comprehend the potential of your own preferences. Despite having significant differences in preferences, many people connect. © Copyright Michigan Virtual 2019 Revised =lastEdited() Page 4
