Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione When you think of video games, what comes into your mind? It might be the very first console you ever played on, or your favorite character from a video game; but for most, either Mario or Sonic pop in immediately. Although Sonic isn’t as relevant today as he was in his prime, he was the first character to stand up against the monopoly Mario single-handedly held for almost a decade. In nearly every way, Sonic was similar enough to be comparable to Mario, but different enough to stand out as a new video game to be excited for. There are several key factors contributing to settle the debate of who is better? The commercials playing in the 90s made it out to be a civil war of the video gamers For Mario, the games and series as a whole will almost always follow a single, linear story. The Koopa King kidnaps Princess Peach and it is up to the Mario Brothers to save her. On the way, they are trumped by several of the king's children, henchmen, and other evildoers. Almost every mainline mario game follows this plot. Mario occasionally meets new allies or is in another type of trouble unrelated to the Princess’ needing of saving, such as in “Super Mario Sunshine” where Mario is sentenced to clean up an island which he was framed for having dirtied, or in “Super Mario Galaxy” where mario meets Princess Rosalina and he aids her quest to restore power to her spaceship. But all in all, king bowser has been at the root of it all nearly every time. The story is very basic and doesn’t bring anything spectacular on paper, but it doesn’t matter when the gameplay is as great as it is. Sonic is usually against his own archnemesis, Doctor Robotnik. The doctor seeks to assimilate all the planet's inhabitants (animals) into robotic henchmen to do his dirty work, and Sonic must stop him at all costs. Sonic has his own allies and the games vary from title to title as
Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione far as what the specific plot is, but they usually involve the doctor in one way or another. Sonic’s allies and other characters in the world of Sonic sometimes fight Sonic, but usually eventually teams up with Sonic in the fight against Robotnik. The six chaos emeralds appear as a macguffin of sorts in many of the sonic games. Whoever wields the six emeralds has seemingly unlimited power. Sonic has yielded several emeralds throughout several of the games, and once they are used, the gems scatter themselves to set up for the next time they need to be used. The story is a bit deeper when it comes to sonic games, and several lines of graphic novels have even spawned giving further depth to the lore and context for Sonics journeys. Mario has not changed much as far as gameplay. Every entry in the games usually play nearly identical control wise, but introduce a new mechanic of some sort to keep the game interesting and distinct from the others. Most levels have a single path you’re expected to follow, save for the secret exit levels that can skip entire worlds. The staple mechanic in mario games revolves around running, jumping, and landing on enemies to kill them. Power ups come into play occasionally, aiding mario and giving him unique powers, such as the ability to shoot fire from his hands, or the ability to fly even. The main and most iconic power up is the mushroom, which turns mario into a slightly taller version of himself. Mario is usually defeated when an enemy lands a hit on him and he is in a small state. Stages in mario are considered easy and seem somewhat repetitive, but variety in level design and a slow drip of mechanics introduced in levels leave the worlds and levels stretched out enough so it never feels like you played the same level twice in a row. The most obvious comparison between Mario and Sonic is the gameplay. Sonic can have a bit of a skill curve and the momentum can be easily lost, but Mario ultimately proves to be a more universally acclaimed franchise for platforming fans.
Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione Sonic has had several overhauls of gameplay that vary in favoritism by fans. At its core, Sonic games are extremely fast paced. The games usually play the same as well, revolving around running fast, running up walls, building momentum, and defeating enemies while in a ball form. The ball form is accessible while jumping, and spin dashing. Levels are usually very similar as far as design goes, but are extremely varied in visual design. Most levels will be maze- like, where no path is necessarily the wrong path and they all lead to the end of the level. There aren’t many power ups, but any rings collected will keep you alive. If Sonic has even one ring on him, he will not be defeated in one hit, he can continuously drop all his rings and pick them back up, but sonic cannot be defeated so long as he has a ring on him. Some new sonic games have strayed from the traditional gameplay mechanics and aim to appeal to a wider audience, so “old” Sonic isn’t as common as “old” Mario anymore. Mario has seen huge success in both his 3d and 3d games. Mario 2d games have been iconic for their creative use of level themes and level design, on top of just being plain fun. The mechanics introduced in any given mario game never overstay their welcome and leave you satisfied with the journey you just experienced. Mario's first transition to a 3d game was a phenomenal hit and is to this day considered one of the best video games of all time. “Super Mario 64” sold more than 12 million copies (Nintendo 2019 financial report JP), and would be remade for the nintendo DS and would go on to sell another 6 million (Gizmodo.com, 30 Best selling Mario games of all time on the plumbers birthday). Every one of Mario’s 3d games would go on to be huge commercial hits and sell better than the last, with the most recent example being “Super Mario Odyssey” selling nearly 20 million copies(Nintendo 2019 financial report JP). Although 3d Mario games were huge and in demand, there was still demand for 2d, traditional mario games. The most recent game “New Super Mario Bros U” would sell nearly 6

Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione million copies, and be ported to the Nintendo Switch and sell an additional 7.4 million copies (Gizmodo.com, 30 Best selling Mario games of all time on the plumbers birthday. As mentioned before, each Mario game is incredibly distinct despite playing nearly the same. Let it be the unique art style of all the older games, or the power ups that came and went with each game, or the co-op functionality of the newer games, Mario has never not been the king of video games both 2d and 3d. The transition from 3d to 3d was more of a broadening of horizons for Mario, rather than a full transition. Sonic on the other hand did not handle the jump from 2d to 3d well at all. Sonic’s first 3d game “Sonic Adventure” would only sell 2.5 million copies ( Johnny L. Wilson (2004), High Score!: The Illustrated History of Electronic Games ) and was considered one of the worst 3d platformers because of the buggy, glitch fest it was. The controls did not feel as airtight as Mario 64’s did, and being a hedgehog travelling at the speed of sound did not translate well at all in 3d. Sonic would continue to go back and forth in 2d and 3d games, with some hybrid games between 2d and 3d, like “Sonic Boom” and “Sonic Colors” which each dwindled on their sales numbers being 620,000 copies and about 2 million copies respectively(Sega Sammy 2019 Financial Report). Each Sonic game had a somewhat specific target audience and it was not getting easier to get into Sonic games with the difficulty curves. The 3d Sonic games have not stood the test of time at all either. Nearly none of them have proven to be fan favorites in particular; though, there have been some diamonds in the rough. Mario has aged perfectly since his debut in 1981. Each entry in the Mario franchise contributes to the franchise as something unique and something that will stand the test of time. More recent Mario games can be considered significantly easier to beat, and easier to understand all the mechanics, but it never turns anyone away from Mario. The art style evolves with each
Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione entry, but generally stays true to the original source material. The story of each mario game generally is the same but that isn’t necessarily ever a problem. It's mostly a case of “if it aint broke dont fix it.” The introduction of new mechanics with each 2d and 3d game keeps the franchise fresh and creatively attracts a bigger audience with each installment as the games are as much fun to watch a commercial of someone playing as they are to actually play Sonic on the other hand has lost his footing. Sonic games are pretty varied because of the experimentation of the Sonic team under Sega. For as fast as Sonic the Hedgehog is, he couldn’t keep up with Mario. Sonic games at their core, look fun. Running fast and defeating enemies in the old school sonic style still has its appeal. A fan made game that gained the attention of Sega recently became a fully fledged main line sonic game titled “Sonic Mania” and it became one of the best selling Sonic games of all time with over one million copies in under a year, and almost 9 million to date( gamesindustry.biz,Sonic Mania success makes up for digital shortfalls in Sega financials) . Despite one of Sonic’s best selling games coming out just 3 years ago, it is more of a remix of the original games, and even still has the same 16 bit art style as the original games, further proving the solid aging of Sonic as a character and as a franchise; even if the new stuff isn’t as original as the old stuff. All in all, Mario and Sonic were worthy opponents to stand up to each other. Several other studios and video game teams tried to stand up but all failed, but something about Sonic and the rise of the Sega Genesis console gave Nintendo and Mario a run for their money. Sonic was king for a short while, but Mario would ultimately outlive and outshine Sonic in the long run and prove to be the biggest video game icon of all time. Mario and Sonic have teamed up several times in collaborative video games, such as “Super Smash Bros” as well as the “Mario and Sonic
Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione at the Olympic Games” series of games, but as a franchise, Mario has remained untouchable as the undisputed video game representative.

Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione Assignment set 3: Assignment 29:Sample essay 1 outline: Thesis: Both phones are known for their amazing camera quality, with similar battery lives, and durability thresholds; however, the iPhone 11 has better storage options and is much cheaper, but the Samsung Galaxy Note10 has better display specs and a better design. Criteria: Camera: The iphone has three cameras two on the back and 1 on the front, the samsung has four cameras in total. Battery life: Both the iphone and samsung have all day battery life. Durability: Both have durability covered when buying, and have water resistant features and great gorilla glass display for the samsung. Storage: As for storage the iphone has 3 different GB options for cheaper cost, while the samsung only has one Gb option and a very hefty price tag. Display: the samsung has better display specs and a better design than the iphone that lacks those perks. Conclusion: It is up to the consumer, both smartphones are different in many ways. It doesn't necessarily mean that one is better than the other.
Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione Assignment 30: Sample essay 2 outline: Thesis: After taking these factors into consideration, it is clear as to why the American Academy of Pediatrics, as well as most expectant mothers, view breastfeeding as the ideal choice. Criteria: Busy scheduling in a moms life: formula feeding is more convenient and allows the schedule to be cleared up. Money: As for money baby formula can be expensive so using the breast milk will allow for a cheaper/less expensive tactic on feeding your babies. Connection with baby: Breastfeeding is a sacred experience with another and child that is far more emotional than bottle feeding. Immune system/health: A baby’s immune system takes breastfeeding way better than bottle feeding. It is overall healthier for the baby. Digestion: A baby's digestive system is very sensitive so like their immune system breastfeeding is the safer option for the baby’s health. Conclusion: Despite similarities between breastfeeding and bottle feeding, mothers should consider the pros of breastfeeding in accordance with those of formula feeding prior to deciding on which method of feeding to do so that they may choose the method that best aligns with their desires. Assignment 31: Sample essay 3 Gen Z is pragmatic while millennials are idealistic: Millennials were an optimistic generation that’s often seen as being pandered to by parents and adults in their lives. Evidence: the proverbial millennial participation trophy. Meanwhile, those in Gen Z are more pragmatic. While millennials were raised during an economic boom, Gen Z grew up during the recession. Music taste: While similar in some ways millennials tend to not understand the current music of Gen Z such as our rap and hip hop/pop genres. Gen Z prefers in-store shopping; millennials shop online: Millennials are professional online shoppers. They pull out their smartphones or laptops anytime they want something new. They watched the world go from AOL dial-up to always-on connectivity, and they take advantage of this convenience at every turn. Perhaps some of the recent brick-and-mortar blight is due to millennials’ move away from the mall. Assignment 32: Horse Guide video Criteria 1) Criteria in Video: The horse does not get distracted like helper dogs. Panda’s life expectancy is longer than a dogs. Downsides, animals unlike dogs are prone to diseases and can give humans these illnesses. Also, many helper animals are prone to aggression unlike dogs. 2) Criteria expanded: 1. The size of a horse compared to a dog. 2. A horse's food intake compared to a dog. 3. How much more time does a horse need to be trained over a dog. 3. Will the horse be harder to travel with. 4. The cost of a horse compared to a dog. 5. Does it need more space to roam compared to a dog? Assignment 33: Didn't work for me!!!!! Assignment 34: Toyota Camry/ Honda Accord: Criteria: 1.Camry and Accord both have new styles in latest models. 2. Tech is more advanced in both cars 2018 models. 3. Safety is great in both cars. 4. The Accord is smoother with tech for spacing between cars. 5. Entertainment features such as the radio dash are superior in the

Assignment Set 3 and Compare and Contrast essay Danielle Scaglione Accord. 6. Accord has a bigger trunk and more space. 7. Higher attention to quality in Cabin feature in Honda compared to Camry. 8. The Camry has better visual aesthetics/ new colored interior compared to Accord. 9. Toyota offers a V6 model unlike the Honda. 10. Both drive smoothly on the ground. Additional Criteria to be considered: Which model has more colors for the exterior and interior of the car? Bias: The lady reviewing the Camry and the Accord had a bias towards the Honda. She continued to remind the viewers on how Honda has better models and features. She preferred a lot of the criteria due with Hondas than Toyotas. She also mentioned how the general public seems to feel the same as her when comparing the two. I think she kept a fair argument even though you could tell which model she preferred. Assignment 35: Mario vs. Sonic Assignment 36: Story telling Gameplay Spin off properties Traditional 2d versus traditional 3d games How well the characters have aged EXTRA CREDIT PART III:ALIEN VS. ALIENS Criteria in video: What I took away from this youtube video comparing both of these movies was that they were both phenomenal sci fi films. They have great casting on their side as well. Some contrasts would be that Alien is slow building horror while Aliens is fast past action packed. They also focused more on the cast in Alien and in Aliens gave the focus to Ripley's character and how strong she is as a protagonist. Additional Criteria: Some things I would add would be, who had a better music score, which movie has a longer runtime, which made more box office sales, how many aliens were used in each film, and which film had a better ending. Assignment 37: Story Telling -Mario, the games and series as a whole will almost always follow a single, linear story. Spin off properties - Mario has been considered the king of spinoff properties. Some of the most iconic video games of all time are spin off Mario games. -Mario Kart is a kart racing game with Mario characters and themed levels, karts, and items. The franchise has sold over 150 million copies total to date and is the single most popular racing franchise of all time. -Although not specifically a mario game, Mario is a staple character in the “Super Smash Bros” fighting game franchise of games, which has sold over 60 million copies total. - Mario Party is a board game spin off featuring a board where players take turns rolling dice, collecting coins and stars, and competing in mini games. The franchise has sold nearly 40 million copies, and is a pretty unique genre of video game. - Paper Mario is a turn based RPG in the paper themed Mushroom Kingdom. The style of the game and combat system can turn new players away from it, and it is thus one of the least successful spin off franchises sitting on just over 11 million total copies sold. -Mario has several other franchises based on sports with varying success, including a soccer spinoff, “Mario Strikers Charged”; a series of tennis spinoff games, “Mario Tennis”; and a baseball spinoff, “Mario Super Sluggers” to name a few. - Mario has also been on an animated television series, a movie, and a new animated film coming soon. A new mario themed park in Universal Studios is slated to open soon as well - Sonic has not seen nearly as many spinoff games, but still remains the Icon of Sega and appears throughout several spinoff properties. - “Sonic & Sega All-stars Racing” is a good example as it is a series that only has two games, and they have sold approximately a combined 3 million copies. - Sonic doesn’t have very many spin off games and is slowly losing his commercial relevancy. Sonic has tried several different takes on the story, like “Sonic and the Secret Rings” and “Sonic Unleashed” which both turn the game from a 2d platformer into 3d platformers and beat-em-ups, but these games ultimately flopped in comparison, selling under 500 thousand copies, and 2.45 copies respectively. -Sonic has several animated television series and a live action film that has released this year that have done quite well for the blue blur, but nowhere near enough to bring him to his spotlight in the Nintendo vs Sega days. Traditional 2d versus traditional 3d games - Mario has seen huge success in both his 3d and 3d games.
