Narrative Performance Review Form Narrative Performance Review Form Employee: Grant Trygstad Employee Title: BCOM 206 Student Supervisor: Marcy Leasum Orwig, PhD Performance Period: Fall 2023 A. Performance Assessment (Min. 100 words each) 1. Describe your work on the résumé assignment. Please explain how the task benefited your professional growth, and how you will approach future job campaign situations as a result. On the resume assignment, I made sure to include all the major components that show a potential employer that I am a suitable candidate. I included all my previous jobs and the tasks involved in it. I also made sure to include my skills, education, clubs, and accomplishments. This task benefitted my professional growth because it not only gave me a better understanding of how to put together a visually appealing and professional resume, but it allowed me to reflect on my past experiences and see where I have a potential to make myself stand out even more. This resume has already been successful for me as I have used it to approach summer internships already. I now have a few different companies that are interested in hiring me and it all started with sending them my resume, which showed how I am a qualified candidate for the positions that I applied for. 2. Evaluate your email correspondence assignment. Please describe your reasons for choosing the organizational approach(es) you used for the content (i.e., direct, or indirect) and how that will benefit you moving forward in your career development. When evaluating my email correspondence assignment, I looked over all the various aspects that I included in the document, and I used direct communication to best get across my questions. By doing so, I was able to directly address the questions to be sure to get a clear response for each one from my business professional. Writing my email in this way gave my reader the best opportunity to take the time to go question by question and go into detail on their response to each one. This type of organization in any sort of business writing in my future will positively affect my career development because it will allow me to communicate much better than others. It is easy to forget the basics when it comes to successfully communicating within the workplace and this assignment made it much clearer for me how to do so and have my tone come across correctly. 3. Provide an overview of your contributions to the team business report. Please discuss how your contributions benefited the group, and how you will apply what you learned from the collaboration to future work. In the team business report, I wrote my section of successful communication within real estate, I also created the included graphic, and I was the one to go through the report and make sure all the formatting was correctly done and that everything was in order. My contributions benefited the group because I not only focused on my part of the report, but I also made sure to check over my peers writing and be sure that they had all their formatting correct. This adds value because it created an extra layer of assurance for them. This minimizes a possible error and makes the report come out cleaner and formatted all the same. I will apply what I learned from this collaboration to my future by using the experience to guide my next steps when I need to participate in group work. This project gave me valuable experience and made me realize how everyone must do their part to make things like this come together successfully. Page 1 of 3
Narrative Performance Review Form 4. Comment on your persuasive strategies for the letter assignment. Please provide specific reasons for your content choices, and how you will apply that exercise to your future work. In my letter assignment, I made sure to present my content in a way that was most likely to persuade my reader to follow the steps that I had outlined to set them up for being successful when it comes to the topic of business communication. To do this I first developed credibility in myself by citing my business professional and some of the knowledge that I gained through her. Next, I gave examples of how failing to successfully communicate in the business world can lead to failure. This was all included to catch the readers' attention and make them interested in learning about the practices that I later included in my letter. I went through numerous examples of some of the best practices that I found the most useful when talking about business communication and I included them in my letter with reasoning behind them to give the best chance at persuading the reader to make these changes in their lives to set themselves up for success in the future. B. Goal Setting and Development Plan (Min. 100 words each) 1. Summarize the areas of your communication skills that are currently strong. Please be as specific as possible. Some of the areas of my communication skills that are currently strong include writing reports, emails, and persuasive letters. I am also good at making sure to step up as a leader whenever I am part of a collaboration if I feel I can add or am more knowledgeable than others on a specific topic. I enjoy writing and I can effectively get across a message using emails or letters in a straightforward way for the reader. Throughout the semester, I have learned additional skills that have helped me develop these skills even more and I am now even more confident in my abilities. In the writing units such as the letter or the email correspondence unit, I found these to come more naturally to me and I was able to do them quicker than other units. 2. Discuss the areas of your communication skills that could improve. Please share specific examples. The areas of my communication skills that could improve focus mostly around in-person communication. Even though I am good and feel comfortable when it comes to communicating online or through mail, I find it hard to get the same messages across in-person. For example, I have always struggled when it comes to presenting in front of a class. It is more anxiety provoking to me and in the moment, I become lost for words, and I freeze up easily. These are not problems that I encounter when I am writing something because I have time to look it over and check for any errors. When it comes to communicating in person, I feel like I am less confident, and it gets in the way of how effective I am at getting the information across in the best way possible. 3. Share your plan for continuing to improve your communication skills. Comment on whether you will consider additional coursework, student-led organization opportunities, or future use of the Business Writing and Presentations Studio. I will continue to improve my communication skills after this class by continuing to put myself out there and engage in anything that can give me practice at developing my communication skills. Some of the ways in which I will do so include participating in the opportunities inside of the clubs that I am a part of including DECA, FMA, and AMA. There are competitions that I can get involved in that can help me develop the weaknesses that I still have in my communication skills. Participating in these competitions will help strengthen my public speaking skills which will help when it comes to communicating in the workplace in the future with my coworkers and boss. For example, as you think about discussions, do you consider your participation to be effective and of high quality which considers multiple perspectives? If "yes," why? If "not yet" what is a specific skill that you would like to develop to become a more effective participant in collaborative discussion? My contributions to discussions throughout the semester have been thoughtful and are always detailed to ensure that my small piece in the collaboration is of the highest quality so that my peers are able to get the most out of it. I always make sure to give my best thought to all the prompts and questions listed so that I can really think about what I will include in my contribution before doing so. When responding, I was sure to be respectful and acknowledge the fact that others may not always agree with my point of view. As a result of this, I considered multiple perspectives in my response to be the most educated and knowledgeable about the topic at hand before crafting a response. I feel that throughout the semester I have been good at the discussions. I always gave my full attention and made sure to respond in a way that would help my peers and give insight that they may not have thought of before.
