Good evening everyone For the second week, we are asked to talk about communication and whether we are open or closed listeners. In the emergency management field, there are many ways that we must be heard as there is no algorithm, we can use for emergency response as all disasters are different and do not happen when we want. So, when there is a change in command you must use certain methods so others can see your choice. For example, I just took over the training in decontamination and other emergency response training. With this, I had to adopt my methods
of how I speak about my changes. This was due to my audience, as it would change from doctors, nurses, business managers, and other emergency response personnel. The hospital’s business managers can see my methods of emergency response as a waste of resources as they
are not educated on why we need this emergency response plan, equipment and to be honest my job. My position is just a huge insurance policy for the hospital in case a disaster ever happens at one of our 20 hospitals. I consider myself an open listener, this is due to my background in fire rescue and as a medic. I need to be able to listen to either one or more people while I have a very chaotic scene behind me. I know this example may seem like wrong, but I use the same skills to listen to everyone. Hearing the opinions of others can help me see something that I may not have thought of or even seen. For part 2 I chose to observe my co-workers while we discussed some emergency response plans. The two were in deep conversation about our response route and the many different impacts that could happen. The two were not very understanding of each other’s thoughts and it would take a few other people for them to come into the conversation before they would see
that the route, they were arguing about would not work as they were standing less than 50 feet
away from a helicopter pad. My recommendation to them would be that they need to be more observative not only of their surroundings but of each other. They were too worried about who was right and to make their response route the one we would implement instead of the hazard that would impact the actual outcome of our response routes. Part 3 Assessment score was a 76 with Patient
a.
I.
I believe I am a fairly good listener, though I can get distracted at times. II.
Staying focused, I have a large family a mini zoo, a full-time go that can be 24/7, and a full-time student so my plate is overflowing and can sometimes make my mind wander. b. i. I feel that these results were spot on as I said before I will wander, or I have a thing of just letting others continue to speak and not speak up and get bored with the conversation which can lead to wandering again. ii. First I could work on the wandering while others are speaking and learn to shut off certain things at times. For example shutting of school worries while at work. It would also work
for worrying about work or checking emails after hours. Since I am in emergency response you
never know when it could happen so I am always on call, or I won’t let myself be off the clock as
it is something that is just hard-wired and needs to let someone else take over for a change.
