I chose a Ted talk titled The Art of Effective Communication by Marcus Alexander Velazquez. This video discussed the importance of effective communication and how to communicate information in a shorter amount of time without including a bunch of dialog that is unnecessary. Marcus defined effective communication as the delivering of information that is accurately received in the least amount of time without being an emotional burden (Velazquez, 2020). If you communicate ineffectively, you waste your time and others involved in that conversation. Ineffective communication can cause misunderstanding which can harm a relationship which is why it is so important to effectively communicate. I thought it was interesting that Marcus said that talking for longer than necessary, using too many words or added stories that are not important to the point can cause people to lose interest due to short attention span but more importantly cause an emotional burden on those who are listening. Marcus also mentioned people can have what is referred to as “diarrhea of the mouth” which made me chuckle because I have been known to be that person in conversation, talking for longer than needed, going from point A to point C to point B and getting lost along the way.
For me, learning to effectively communicate is an ongoing process. I think learning to effectively communicate would help in the workplace because there are a lot of times, I have found myself sitting in a meeting that will go on for an hour or more and if there had been a more structured agenda and less stops along the way it would have been more effective and less time and more productive overall. In a post on Harvard’s professional and executive development page there was a post written by Mary Sharp Emerson who went over ways to improve communication skills and out of the eight items listed I think the most important was “Prepare ahead of time” (Emerson, 2021). Being prepared before going into a situation at work I think would help effectively communicate whatever the topic is and help keep a person on track.
