N3352 Legacy of the Family Assignment Module 3-1 Cultural Competency Self-Assessment Name: Oluwayemisi Somorin Date: 07/18/2022 Overview: Cultural Competence Self-Assessment The PROMOTING CULTURAL and LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY Self-Assessment Checklist for Personnel Providing Primary Health Care Services checklist is intended to heighten the awareness and sensitivity of health care givers to the importance of cultural and linguistic cultural competence in health, mental health and human service settings. It provides concrete examples of the kinds of beliefs, attitudes, values and practices which foster cultural and linguistic competence at the individual or practitioner level. There is no answer key with correct responses. However, if you frequently responded "C", you may not necessarily demonstrate beliefs, attitudes, values and practices that promote cultural and linguistic competence within health and mental health care delivery programs. Instructions: 1. Complete the PROMOTING CULTURAL and LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY Self-Assessment Checklist. Some questions may not apply to your current role. Please do you best to answer with A, B, or C. There is not a wrong answer. 2. Score and review your responses. Ask yourself if you have Cultural and Linguistic competence. From your personal experience where are your strengths and weaknesses? You are not required to submit your self assessment scores. Please complete the reflections below for assignment 3-1. Conclusions and Reflections Answer the following questions using your personal opinions and views. Write a minimum of 100 words in one or two paragraphs for this assignment. APA is not required. If you cite sources please add references. 1. Describe your overall CULTURAL and LINGUISTIC COMPETENCY strengths, and weaknesses. The self-assessment checklist has assisted me to understand some of the strengths and weak- nesses that might affect my work as a healthcare provider. Some of my strengths include my ability to help the community members of the area I serve to fully comprehend information pub- lished in the healthcare facilities by ensuring that the materials are written in a language they can easily understand. On the other hand, I realized that I must improve my relationship with the families I serve by putting more effort to learn familial colloquialism. Ideally, this might impact the assessment, treatment, and health promotion interventions. 2. How will this awareness help you communicate with families? ©2013 University of Texas at Arlington Page 1 of 2
N3352 Legacy of the Family This assessment will play a critical role by helping me improve my relationship with the families under my care. Ideally, I understand that communication plays a significant role during the treat- ment process. Poor communication can deter a healthcare provider from offering quality care, given that they do not understand their patient’s needs. Consequently, it is essential to bring along a person who can offer professional translation services to bridge the communication gap where necessary. Additionally, this assessment has helped me understand that culture greatly in- fluences the process of care in the medical field. For this reason, it is paramount to understand the culture of the community that one serves and communicate effectively while observing cul- tural boundaries. 3. What did you learn that surprised you? One of the things that surprised me while filling in the self-assessment checklist is that health- care personnel need to scan books and videos offered to a certain community to determine whether they contain any negative cultural, ethnic, or racial stereotypical information. Ideally, I always screen the learning materials before giving it out to my clients, but for a different reason. In other words, I go through the material to ensure that they contain the appropriate information. The assessment checklist has helped me learn that it is essential to protect clients from stereotyp- ical materials that might negatively affect them.
