DFM3 - DFM3 Task 1 Devynn Adams 001300218 A. 1. Determining the Influence of Media on American Culture and Stereotypes, 12th grade 2. Developing Drug Awareness and Resistance Skills, sixth grade 3. “Building Classroom Community through the Study of Chinese Art and Culture” second grade B. 1 . Discuss specific examples of how the teachers in the observed videos effectively incorporated the needs of individual learners within their learning environments, including at least one example of each of the following from any of the three videos. Cultural needs - In video 3, “Building Classroom Community through the Study of Chinese Art and Culture” the educator connected educational content with cultural elements. One of the students was able to share an experience where the student’s family went on a family trip, and the teacher was then able to connect this trip to discuss a lesson about India. The teacher then was able to encourage students the think, question, and explore ideas about other cultures and societies. Then she was able to continue the lesson by collaborating further to deepen the students' understanding of music and visual arts that are largely popular in Chinese culture. Social needs - In the 1st video, “Determining the Influence of Media on American Culture and Stereotypes,” the teacher did an outstanding job incorporating a large brand - Disney - all while teaching a challenging topic for the lesson. The teacher used a strategy that would encourage students to dive deep into the concepts they have learned, apply that lesson to their socioeconomic experiences, and bring conversation to the classroom. The teacher engaged students from a wide variety of academic levels, with inclusivity, and made sure that all students had a chance to contribute. She made sure that students felt comfortable by being a welcoming educator by using informal and age-appropriate language to help foster an environment that encourages open communication. Emotional needs - In the 2nd video, “Developing Drug Awareness and Resistance Skills,” the teacher did a lesson where students looked at different ads about drugs. The teacher met the students' emotional needs by showing empathy to the students while they were observing and discussing these ads. The teacher honed into the positive influences in
their lives that would help them make positive choices in their lives - by meeting their emotional needs, the students were able to feel comfortable sharing their ideas. 2. Discuss two ways that the teachers could have more effectively incorporated individual learners’ cultural, social, or emotional needs in the learning environments. - In the 2nd video, the teacher did a really good job incorporating social needs by providing examples of what students could do instead of drugs socially, mentally, or physically. However, the teacher could have more effectively incorporated emotional needs by discussing how these drugs can affect families and friends. Although the teacher met their emotional needs by creating an environment where students felt comfortable sharing, she could have dug deeper into how drugs can affect those around them. - In the 3rd video, the teacher could have more effectively broadened the experience by creating a project for students to do at home. The students could take home their project and discuss with their families about their cultures. This project would help students learn that many cultures have traditions, some are similar and some are very different. She then could have the students present their projects ensuring inclusivity of a variety of cultures. 3. Discuss two culturally sustaining pedagogy strategies that you could incorporate into your future practice as a teacher. 1. Schools are accountable to the community (CA Dept of Education) 2. Valuing community languages, practices, and ways of being (CA Dept of Education) - These are two pedagogy strategies that I plan to use in my future practice. I believe that community is critical. We depend on our community to help ensure the success of our students as they grow. The school and the community need to work together to create and foster an environment that will ensure success for the students and future citizens of that community. I will always value my students. In that, I will value community languages, practices, and ways of being. To do this, I will encourage communication, questions, and open discussion about our community. a. Explain how you can apply the two strategies from B3 in your future classroom. - I will apply both of these strategies by creating engaging lessons that will connect us with the community that we are in. While I create lessons that are accountable to the community - I will be creating lessons that value the community and their languages, practices, and ways of being. I will bring in community members who are prominent in the area to bring the community into our classroom, as well as use classroom decorations that resemble the community. 4. Explain how you could involve your students’ caregivers in the execution of the two strategies from part B3, including one specific example for each strategy from part B3. - I would involve the child’s caregivers in the strategy, schools are accountable to the community, by doing a field trip where our class goes into the community to see the
