Check List: Having a solid foundation of knowledge prior Elaboration on feedback Students are producers of knowledge Teacher summarizes and restates responses Teachers pose thoughtful response questions Communicates value of discussion, mutual respect, multiple perspectives People bounce ideas off of each other Thoughts and opinions are respectfully discussed between individuals Clear pronunciation Demonstrate a clear understanding of material Students are prepared (ie. bring the appropriate materials, presentation, etc) Students/ teacher are respectful of others opinions Class/one-on-one discussions Small groups for students who struggle with public speaking Students think outside the box Participation Students engage during class discussions Small groups ________________________________________________________________________
After watching the video and comparing it to the checklist, there are some things that should be noted. First of all, there was the teacher student interaction was something that I liked quite a bit, the teacher call back and break away was creative and unique, I liked how she showed that material once, had the students “mirror her” then teach their peers the same material, she gave the students about 30-45 seconds to teach the material, then called the class back, if she liked what she say, she would give the class a point and if not she took a point which is something that I feel the students liked. Although, not all the boxes were checked in the video, it was a short video and I am sure she would have allowed for more of the boxes to be checked. I think the biggest problem I had with the video was that it was very robotic, the class didn’t really allow for students to do anything outside of what the teacher was doing, the students felt very drilled which could be a good or bad thing, but it seemed a bit forced which could push some students away. The discussion was mostly monologic, but at the same time the students had moments where it can be considered dialogic because the teacher breaks the kids away to their peers where they have to teach the materials, but between the teacher and the student it was mostly “do as I do” for the lesson, now again the video was only about 6 minutes, the teacher could definitely have moved to a more dialogic style but from what was noticed, there really wasn’t too much dialog between teacher and students. The ideas that support that the students were gaining an understanding of the material could be observed in the breakouts that the teacher had put the kids in, the students had to teach what they were just taught. This was interesting and seemed elementary, but I think it would be really effective for cementing the foundation to new concepts, which is what the teacher was doing. I think overall the video introduced some cool takeaways that can be brought to the classroom, but I think that the students should also not seem so cut throat, it felt very drilled which, yes it is important to have classroom management, but at the same time the students need to have educational freedom and want to express the knowledge they have just been taught and teach it to their peers in their own words rather than following word for word what the teacher said. It felt monotone, and that is one of my biggest pet peeves that I remember from some of my classes when classes felt that way.
