How can legalizing Marijuana, cannabis, and the hemp create a more sustainable world?
Marijuana, cannabis, and hemp have created heated debates in the media for many years
now. Many people are pushing for the legalization of drugs, while others are against the idea.
Those who are supporting the concept have plenty of reasons, most of which are commendable,
for they stand to create a better version from what many people think. Farmers, sellers,
politicians, and users each have different reasons for why they believe the government needs to
legalize the drug and its products. On the other hand, the efforts by those who want the
government to legalize the drug are facing opposition from other groups that think the drug has
devastating effects on the well-being of society. The legalization process has led to the creation
of different debates that go beyond the issue of legalization. For instance, a lot of people are
currently arguing on how the legalization will help the economy, the morality, as well as the
environment. Despite the challenges that the legalization of marijuana, cannabis, and hemp will
bring to society, it will be of significance to the environment, creating a sustainable environment.
The legalization will generate money that can be used to establish environmental-friendly
projects. The government can get money from the drug through taxation. Although federal law
treats marijuana as an illegal drug, many states have legalized it. The states have currently got a
lot of money from the sale of these drugs. Consequently, governments use the money to establish
projects such as green energy. Renewable sources of electricity, such as hydropower, wind
power, and biomass, create a sustainable environment. All these projects need a lot of funds from
the government. Therefore, the government should see the legalization of marijuana as an
opportunity to get the money that will be essential in setting up these projects.
1
Additionally,
some projects will aim at recycling used products to manufacture new useful things.
Consequently, the plans will help to generate more money that can be useful for many
generations to come.
Legalization will create eco-friendly farms across the country. At the moment, growers of
the plant do it secretly and use improper farming methods to grow.
2
For instance, some people
develop the plant within the forest to avoid the course of the law. The farmers fully understand
the repercussions of getting into trouble with the government because of marijuana and cannabis.
In other cases, some farmers mix the plant with other plants in the intercropping approach. Some

of the crops they mix with marijuana might not be scientifically recommendable. Therefore, by
engaging in such practices, the farmers cause harm to the environment. After legalization, the
farmers will understand the best methods to use to grow the plant. Some of the farmers will
receive education on how to grow the plant without harming the eco-system. The techniques that
the farmers will use after the legalization will be environmentally friendly.
3
As a result, the
farmers will help in creating a sustainable world through the management of the environment.
The government will also support the farmers by providing farming equipment, education on
agriculture, and financial support. The farmers will, therefore, use environmentally friendly
techniques that will lead to a sustainable world.
Growing of cannabis through indoor techniques consumes a lot of electrical energy. The
government has been condemning the act since it is not environmental friendly. The method uses
electrical power for lighting instead of the natural sunlight.
4
The farmers choose to grow the
plant indoors since it is illegal. Therefore, if the government will legalize the drug, there will be
proper utilization of the light energy, and the plant will grow healthy. Cannabis that grows in the
outdoor does not require the regulation of air. Therefore, the plant will be healthy and free from
mites and diseases. Additionally, cannabis that the farmers grow in the outdoor has high quality
than that in the indoor technique. The cannabis plant that grows outside is free from diseases and
pests since the environment supports a better life for the plant. Lastly, planting of cannabis the
outdoor reduces the costs. Consequently, the farmers can use the money to maintain the
environment and come with ideas on how to create a more sustainable world.
The legalization of hemp will help develop a sustainable world since it has many
advantages. Hemp has many products that can help in generating income for the country.
5
Countries that have legalized the plant are currently earning foreign exchange for the outcomes
of the plant. France is the largest producer of the plant and boasts of many exports to other
countries. In America, the plant is illegal, and the products that might be found in the country
might have come in because of the illegal imports from other countries. Firstly, the plant grows
faster than different types of

plant. A plant that takes a short period to grow has
few maintenance practices, hence less costly. Plants that take long on the form may reduce the

soil fertility of the farm leading to low yields in the preceding crops. Therefore, hemp might not
take long on the farm and reduce the productivity of the land. There can be chances of planting
several plants within a particular period to produce more for the country. For this reason, the
hemp plant has a double advantage to the environment and the economy of the country.
The uses of hemp make it valuable to many people in the world. However, the political
class divides over the conversation. Some politicians want to use the debate to gain political
mileage. Therefore, some are supporting as their political advances while others area against it
since the people against the legalization. Thus, countries that have legalized it are reaping a lot of
money from the plant more than those countries that do not want the plant in their economies.
The plant has many by-products apart from the popular product. For instance, its seeds are
edible, and many people use it as food.
6
Additionally, the plant produces timber to be used by the
many generations in these countries. The many uses of hemp can help in creating a sustainable
world since the amount of money that could apply to the purchase of such kinds of food can
establish environmental friendly projects in the country. Many countries in the world are
currently looking for ways of improving the economies and creating a sustainable environment
that can make the nations to prosper. Therefore, an opportunity as one of legalizing hemp plant
and hemp products can be a significant step in the modern setting.
The hemp plant is a good cover crop. As confirmed from the countries that grow the
plant, the crop adds profit to the farmer's yearly incomes since apart from playing the role of a
cover crop, the farmer gets money from its products. The plant improves soil fertility through its
leaves. The hemp plant is leafy, and the presence of the leaves on the farm adds nutrients to the
soil, improving the productivity of the land. The farmer planting other crops on the same farm
gets the benefits of agriculture through the help of the plant.
7
By this, the plant helps to cut the
cost of fertilizers, and the farmer might not purchase as more fertilizers as those who might not
be having the plant on the farm. As a cover crop, the plant kills weeds in the farm and reduces
the costs of weeding by the farmer, such as the purchase of herbicides. The economic impact of
hemp on agriculture ensures the sustainability of the environment since the farmer can earn more
money to use in improving the environment and the overall ecosystem.

Apart from the financial impact, the crop as a cover crop plays a significant role in
maintaining the environment. The plant prevents soil erosion by covering the ground and
protecting the earth. When the raindrops hit the ground directly, they weaken the soil, creating
other forms of soil erosion such as rill and gulley erosions. Therefore, the cover crops can help to
sustain the environment by preventing erosion from occurring. The plant also conserves the soil
moisture by covering the ground from the direct sunlight. Direct sunlight leads to evaporation of
soil water, making the ground dry. Therefore, if the federal government will decide to legalize
the crop, it will help the agricultural sector and the environment. Consequently, there will be a
sustainable world.
Legalization of marijuana will save the earth from the scorching that comes from
marijuana destruction techniques. The government officials with the responsibility of destroying
the illegal marijuana cargo do not do it with moderations. The burning of the drug creates a
scorching effect on the soil and leads to environmental degradation.
8
For instance, the burning
kills soil organisms that help in improving soil aeration and water infiltration. Therefore, the
process of destroying the plant also destroys the ecosystem in the soil. Legalization will save the
ecosystem from the destruction of the government. The method of burning the drug also
introduces hormone disruptors in the ground, making the land unproductive. Additionally, the
chemicals that the government applies to marijuana farms can get into the rivers and the lakes.
9
The rainwater can wash the chemicals into the rivers during the rainy seasons. The effect of the
substances on water affects the rest of the environment. For instance, the aquatic plants might not
grow well in acidic water. Additionally, marine animals might also face the challenge of living in
water that is full of chemicals. Therefore, legalizing the drug will save the environment from all
the predicaments, creating a sustainable world.
Conclusion/Recommendation
Legalization can help the country to generate money that can establish eco-friendly
projects. The government should sensitize all the political leaders from different parts of the
country come up with projects that will thrive in the areas from where they come. The
legalization of marijuana can help the farmers to come up with farms that support the ecosystem.

For instance, the government, through the department of agriculture, should encourage farmers
to use the best methods of growing the plant after legalization. The growing of marijuana under
legal terms can help the farmers to use natural light instead of wasting the electrical light. The
government should ban all the greenhouses that the farmers use to grow the plant and allow them
to plant through outdoor techniques. Hemp is the most precious of all the types of sativa plants.
Therefore, leaders should stop the importation of the products of hemp and allow the farmers to
grow the plant. The government should also encourage farmers to grow more hemp on their
farms since it will act as a cover crop.
Signature Question Reflection
To create a sustainable world, one needs to understand the expectations of the present
generation and relate it with the projection of what may happen in the future. For instance, an
environmentalist will ensure that human practices today do not harm the environment since the
exercises might have a long-lasting effect on the environment and affect future generations.
People need to consult extensively before taking any step that will aim at sustaining the world for
future generations. A person should notice that if he or she cuts down all the trees, the effect will
be long-lasting. Similarly, if the same person decides to plant many trees, the impact will also be
long-term. Therefore, extensive research should guide people as they forge towards having a
sustainable world.
Educational institutions are also trying to educate the young generations on the
sustainability of the environment since they are the ones who will enjoy in the future. When the
youths get knowledge of sustainability, many people will get to know about it since teenagers are
many and enthusiastic about passing information to other people. Additionally, political leaders
have relevant information concerning the sustainability of the environment. Citizens need to
work hand-in-hand with the leaders since the leaders are the opinion shapers in any given nation.
After such connections and associations, it is easy to understand the steps to take in the process
of creating a sustainable world. The citizens suggest some of the practices that can help in
creating a sustainable world. Political leaders help push the agenda while the administration
implements it.

What I Learned
I have learned that attaining a sustainable world does not come in a day. There are many
processes and activities that the concerned people can go through. For example, the conversation
about legalizing marijuana for a sustainable world has remained in the public domain for long.
The political class takes it back and forth and uses it as a campaign tool for every election.
Citizens are always in the middle since they can implement anything even when most people see
the important part of it.
I have also learned that the implementation of policies depends on the political class that
is in power. Therefore, it is close to an impossibility to try and force for a particular change to
happen when the political leaders are not unanimously supporting the move. Legalization of
marijuana, cannabis, and hemp needs higher forces to join hands and make everyone understand
the essence behind the legalization. Many people might be having the notion that legalization
will make people abuse the drug more than they do at the moment.
Lastly, the practices that may lead to environmental sustainability are worth learning. I
have noted that the social practices that can help to address the issues affecting the environment.
Many people know the environment but fail to implement the ideas in the modern world. The
political class is preventing many practices from happening since they want to be the ones
pushing for it to help them gain popularity. However, the world has made significant steps in
dealing with issues that affect the environment. Many people understand that when you harm
nature, nature can easily hurt you back.
