5. Activity #5 a) Reset the system using the Reset button. Set the constant parameter to None. Add 100 heavy molecules to the gas container and watch the gas molecules move. Describe their motion in terms of speed, direction, collisions. The molecules do not move at the same velocity as they bounce around in different directions and speed changes when they collide with the edges of the gas container or another gas molecule. The speed of the molecules is very slow moving by themselves however when they are hit by another molecule they begin to move faster than slow down again. They are moving in all directions mainly changing directions when colliding with another molecule b) Do all the molecules move at the same velocity? The molecules do not move at the same velocity ¢) Record the temperature:_300K. d) Slide the Horizontal Lid (top side) to make a small opening and notice the rate of effusion. Try to count the number of heavy molecules that leave the gas container in 30 seconds (use the timer). Record your answer here: 12 heavy molecules /30 seconds. e) Reset the activity and add 100 light molecules. How do the velocities of the light molecules compare to the velocities of the heavy molecules that you had in the gas container? Light and heavy molecules both collided with each other and the gas container. Light and heavy molecules displayed different directions in each of their molecules
