Jeremiah Brosovic MBAD 6230 – Dr. Celik March 22, 2024 Disney’s Expedition Everest Case Study 1. Suppose you were a project manager for Disney. Based on the information in this case, what critical success metrics do you think the company uses when designing a new ride? That is, how would you prioritize the needs for addressing project cost, schedule, quality, and client acceptance? What evidence supports your answer? Disney project managers prioritize essential performance criteria for new rides in the following manner: Key factors to consider in a project are quality, client acceptance, project cost, and schedule. According to the information given on the Expedition Everest project, Disney devotes a significant amount of work to ensure that the new ride effectively conveys a captivating narrative and that every customer becomes fully immersed in the story. Disney employs top-notch materials and components in order to narrate the tale effectively where budget and scheduling are intimately intertwined. As a Disney project manager, the best course of action would be to prioritize not only the typical limitations of a project such as time, cost, and client approval, but also the fundamental aspects that the company has consistently valued since its inception. These values being safety, quality, and aesthetic value. These constraints are all interconnected. Disney prioritizes safety and ensures that every aspect of its attractions complies with the most demanding architectural requirements. Disney places paramount importance on ensuring the safety of items that use Disney brands, characters, and other intellectual property. Furthermore, safety is a key factor that influences their operational choices in order to provide a secure and pleasurable experience at all of their theme parks and resorts around the globe. Based on their performance report, Disney continually been involved in industry boards and committees to promote and establish standards and regulations regarding the safety of attractions and facilities. In contrast, aesthetics governs the setting and ambiance of every element inside the theme park, ensuring that each aspect reinforces the narrative that the corporation intends for visitors to immerse themselves in. Disney Editions' The Imagineers state that timely and accurate reporting is necessary for
maintaining cost and schedule visibility in a fast-changing project and division environment as the project progresses through its life cycle. Consequently, the project team is formed and given authority to take responsibility and be held accountable for accomplishing the goals of each specific project. In order to monitor job performance, it is necessary for each work group to have clearly defined goals and a well-defined quantifiable scope of work given. As the project manager, I can effectively oversee the timeline and budget by clearly defining the objectives and deliverables and adapt as necessary from the initial plan. In addition, to adhere to the budget and timeline, the team must prevent unnecessary repetitions by promptly recognizing and delivering designs when they are needed for effective design. Prior to designing and constructing the structural, mechanical, and electrical loads, it is necessary to determine the size and movement specifications for a huge animatronic. As part of his pitch to become the new CEO of Disney in 2005, Bob Iger said that he wanted to “honor and respect creativity as the heart and sole of who we are” (Gallo, 2022). It’s very important to keep this in mind as a project manager for Disney, that you are not just managing a project for any other ordinary company. The work that you do is changing the lives of millions of people and feeding creativity and dreams into youthful minds. The work you do here is more important than it has ever been anywhere else. 2. Why is Disney’s attention to detail in its rides unique? How does the company use the “atmo-sphere” discussed in the case to maximize the experience while minimizing complaints about the length of wait for the ride? Disney's meticulousness is unparalleled as they strive to ensure that each client is fully immersed in the narrative. The atmosphere generates a progressive sequence of events that leads to the climax, which is the ride itself. Customers may perceive the narrative consistently throughout the queue and have a sense of anticipation for the ride, rather than feeling annoyed or impatient due to the waiting period. Walt Disney's meticulous focus on detail in its rides is unparalleled since they are not only marketing rides, but rather creating an immersive experience. The firm employs Imagineering, a division of The Walt Disney firm that is responsible for designing and developing Disney theme parks across the globe. Their objective is to provide a regulated setting in which each element
has a distinct significance and contributes to a segment of visual narrative. The theme park's primary objective is to immerse visitors in an alternate world upon entering the attraction, fostering the illusion that they are actively participating in a narrative and maybe engaging with their beloved characters. The consumers are actively engaged in the tale, rather than passively observing, which reduces complaints during the wait for the trip. Work Cited Gallo, C. (2022, December 2).
