Qualitative Data Analysis Name College of Aviation, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University ASCI 693: Current Research Problems in Aviation/Aerospace Dr. Name Apr 16, 2023 1
Qualitative Data Analysis Results Based on the responses received from class - 20-07, it appears that the trainees have a good understanding of the organization’s zero-mishap safety culture. They were able to explain it in their own words and understood their role in maintaining the safety culture of the organization. Most trainees felt confident in speaking out against unsafe practices and were comfortable asking for help if they could not find safety information. Trainees also expressed that their values aligned with the safety culture of the organization ( Safety training program - Qualitative questionnaire responses. n.d.). Some major themes were identified in the responses, and they were: “Promoting a Safe Work Environment”, with organizing themes such as “Individual Responsibility”, “Reporting Unsafe Behavior”, “Seeking Help and Information”, and “Connecting Personal Values with Safety Culture”. The responses suggest that the training program was successful in achieving some of its goals such as improving trainee engagement in the organization’s safety culture and understanding organizational policies related to safety. Trainees demonstrated comprehension of the organization’s zero-mishap safety culture and were able to apply organizational values to the safety culture. They also knew where to find more information and how to get help from their supervisor. When understanding their roles in safety culture, part of the respondents demonstrated that they should be ensuring that others were safe while performing their tasks while other respondents demonstrated a belief that they should focus and ensure that their actions were safe. Likewise, there were indications of confusion when encountering unsafe situations. While some 2
respondents preferred only reporting the unsafe action to supervisors, others felt they should intervene and stop the unsafe situation immediately. Overall, the trainee feedback indicates that the training program was effective in improving trainee engagement in the organization’s safety culture, but some weaknesses may be present in the training program. Only one of the trainees considered the safety dashboard as a source of information, while others only mentioned that they would ask other people when not finding information. Conclusions The study revealed that most participants were familiar with the organization's safety policies. Furthermore, they possessed an obvious understanding of the zero-mishap safety culture. Nevertheless, the training program had a few drawbacks. Only one responder cited the safety dashboard as the primary source of information, even though this was on the organization's goal. Moreover, there was dissonance among the trainees regarding their obligations to safety culture and what steps they should take when facing a perilous situation. Some believed they must guarantee everyone is acting safely, while others thought it should be their personal duty to act cautiously and end any possible danger promptly. Additionally, some preferred to report to their superiors in unsafe scenarios rather than intervening on their own accord. It is important to consider that some of the study's shortcomings may have impacted the results. Within the class, there was a small sample size of trainees.  Notwithstanding the limitations of the study, the findings are valuable for companies contemplating reviewing and enhancing their safety training programs. This study answered the research question partially and 3

met the research goals. This supplied important data that could be utilized to improve the organization's safety culture and help new trainees address and minimize safety risks. Recommendations The organization should persist in their efforts to administer and improve their training program for it to be more effective in affecting the engagement of trainees in the safety culture and improve comprehension of safety protocols, centering on individual responsibility, reporting of unsafe behavior, asking for help and information, as well as combining personal values with safety culture to keep up the organization's zero-mishap safety policy. To replicate this study, a larger sample can be taken for representing the population better. Introducing a control group that does not undergo the training program is also suggested for a more accurate comparison and assessment. Future research could concentrate on exploring how the training program affects trainee engagement and conduct in the long run. This may include administering follow-up surveys or interviews with trainees to evaluate their sustained understanding and application of safe practices. 4
