Juan Borrego 11/22/2018 INTD670 : Unit 2 DB Professor Plate Since my last name starts with “B”, I will be arguing that the nature of their relationship is an ethical breach. Does Joe’s relationship with Bill meet the definition of a conflict of interest? Yes, Joes relationship with Bill does meet the definition of a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest is when your loyalties or competing interest may be at odds with each other. (Susan M, 2018) Though gifts are commonly exchanged in business, this is very close to crossing the line because of the nature of their business outside of their friendship. Are Bill’s gifts a form of bribery? According to Business Dictionary, “Bribery is the act of taking or receiving something with the intention of influencing the recipient in some favorable to the party, providing the bribe” (Bribery, 2018). Bill probably just think’s he is showing Joe some appreciation. Joe didn’t ask Bill for that case of wine. Is that considered Bribery? I say it is because, Bill may think he is just being a nice guy. However, what Bill is doing is favoring Joe and making him think that he will need to return the favor one day when Bill asks. Which ethical theory supports your view? Why? In Joe and Bill’s scenario, I believe it is a good example of Egoism. This theory is about their own needs and wants. (Ethical Theory, 2018) I think both Bill and Joe are acting within the egoism theory in doing what is for their own personal gain. They may be for different interests, Bill to secure future business deals and Joe to maintain a personal friendship. However, they are putting their companies in jeopardy by doing so. What other ethical issues might be associated with the relationship between Bill and Joe? Bill and Joe are risking the secure future of their companies. If word of their practices gets out to other clients, it could risk losing out on current business deals and sabotaging future ones. They may also spread the word to other potential clients or prospects. Though they may think they are just doing some innocent things between friends, this is leading to very bad business practices.
