Surname: 1 Student’s Name Instructor Course Date Retrospectives of Failures of Business Applications Introduction Orkut, Nokia, and Motorola were once in the leading positions in their market segments. However, the three companies were unable to maintain their positions as market leaders. Various reasons resulted in their failures. This paper looks at what these three companies could have done to avoid failure. What Motorola could have done to Avoid Failure There are various aspects that caused Motorola to fail. A number of things could have been done to save the company. First, it should have focused on the needs and tastes of phone users rather than the retailers it relied upon to deliver its products to the users. If it had done so, it would have known what consumers needed, for instance, it could have moved to 3G. Secondly, Motorola should have continued being innovative. It should not have let other competing companies like Nokia, Samsung, and the rest to become more innovative and have their products, which built market share at the expense of Motorola. Again, Motorola should have focused on a single product which it should have made convincing to its customers instead
Surname: 2 of having a disjointed product line with different phones, styles, operating systems, as well as interfaces. It could have focused on a few efforts taking them forward in some focused way instead of offering everything to everyone in an imperfect way (Anderson). Another way Motorola could have avoided failure would be by showing some sense of urgency. It should have acted like a competitor rather than a monopoly. This way, it could have avoided being a victim of capitalism, which favors innovation while killing those who are slow to execute (Anderson). Finally, Motorola’s senior management should have done their work, which includes developing some strategic perspective, maximizing business performance, and gaining insightful reasoning, innovation, and problem-solving. The leadership should have gone for the right technology, emphasized on advertising, and created a conducive atmosphere to encourage and motivate employees. The latter involves elimination of bias and prejudice with regard to employees. What Nokia could have done to Avoid Failure Similarly, Nokia’s leadership should have done soothing to save the smartphone giant from failing. First of all, the company should have given people a reason to buy its products. This should have been the work of the marketing department. It needed to have a value position to show to its customers that Nokia’s products are the best in the market. iPhones are considered prestigious while Samsung smartphones are considered more versatile and user-friendly. Nokia should have had something special connected to their smartphones (Sandeen). Another thing Nokia could have done was to focus on its competitors while carrying out research to upgrade its products. As a result, it would be able to bring innovative products to the market, which would remain competitive for some substantial time. To do this, Nokia should
Surname: 3 have used all the funds it put on research, as a result, internal reveries into better use that focused not on internal competition but external competition as well. Nokia should have realized that it was not only competing with itself but with Apple, Samsung, and the rest. According to Chang (2012), Nokia should have moved faster in response to competition. The company happened to a pioneer within the smartphone market. They introduced smartphones into the market in 2002 with their Symbian series 60 devices. From there, they did not have trouble maintaining their smartphone leadership position. Nokia should have responded to the introduction of the windows phone before it was too late. Again, they should have responded to the introduction of iPhone, which brought about an app-based operating system and a full-screen touch. Nokia should have responded to the iPhone as well as the shifting customer demand the iPhone brought with it. Nokia should have been more innovative or focus on something different. The company should not have spent way too much time Symbian. It should have bet on a number of platforms like Samsung did. Samsung did bet on windows phone as well as Android and had Bada, its own homegrown OS for a case where the rest could fail. Android paid off ion the end. Nokia should have tried other platforms, not focus on Symbian alone (Chang). What Orkut could have done to Avoid Failure In the case of Orkut, the company should have tried to evolve with changing needs of its users. Just like Motorola, the company did not consider the tastes and changing demand of its product’s end user. First of all, it failed to evolve with regard to consumer privacy. The management should have researched user needs and should not have ignored the issue of privacy.

Surname: 4 This way, it could have created a more controlled environment for its users preventing them from moving to Facebook and Twitter. Another way Orkut should have evolved was showing off itself as an advertiser platform. The management should have researched enough to find that people wanted a platform where they could have fun and at the same time do business. The truth is that Orkut should have put many features in place to be able to compete with other social media platforms. It should have included features like notifications feature, images indicating actions, for instance, the like button in Facebook (Debbarma). Orkut should have done something in response to the undertakings of Facebook and You tube. These two platforms appeared to be observing and studying their users keenly. As a result, the evolved with changing user tastes. Orkut should not have stayed back watching them as they came to take over the market. Introducing the news feed button where users could be informed of the upcoming news, or the notification button where they could view who had tried to conduct them earlier or invite them would be a great idea of retaining its users. The management should have put a research team in place to, continuously study the needs of the user identifying what they liked about the platform and what they did not. Through interviews and questionnaires held online, the platform could have identified what it users disliked about it. This could have helped them take important initiatives that ensured their survival in the market. Conclusion Innovation is an important thing the three companies should have been keen on. By being innovative, they could have maintained their leadership positions. Leadership was an important
