Ethical decision-making is about doing what is right, but it is also about applying scripture to guide Christians in the decisions that are made whether personal or in business, this is the heart of Christian ethics (Hill, 2018). Ethically, Christians have a moral responsibility to do what is right and honor God in the process. When we fall, we should confess our sins and ask for forgiveness “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” ( New International Version, 1973/2005, 1 John 1:9). Humans are different from the rest of God’s creation The Bible tells us in Genesis that God created humans in his own image and gave authority to rule over all living creatures on the ground, birds in the air, and fish in the sea ( New International Version, 1973/2005, Genesis 1:26-31). Nothing else that God created was in his own image but mankind. We are also different from the rest of creation in that God created woman from the rib of Adam and not the dust of the ground thus illustrating both become one flesh in marriage ( New International Version, 1973/2005, Genesis 2:18-25). Responsibilities and privileges of engaging in business Christians have the ethical responsibility of doing what is right not only in their personal lives but also while engaging in business. This does not mean at times it will necessary be easy to uphold ethical standards because of being born of a sinful nature and the temptations that come with it “No temptation has seized you expect what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” ( New International Version, 1973/2005, 1 Corinthians 10:13). When Christian entrepreneurs not only engage in business to obtain profits but to also give God the glory through their actions (Yew et al., 2023). If holiness is about priorities, then honoring God is not violated. It signals us to honor God and is the most important priority we have in our personal and business adventures. We are held accountable by holiness and by living this way we honor God and the relationships it brings so what a privilege this is for a Christian (Hill, 2018). Relating ethical decision-making in business today Furthermore, in western countries, the cultures and legal systems which grow to develop business practices with key values that focus attention on stewardship, love, and service are most influenced by Christianity. Righteousness or truth in daily decision making must be integrated with faith and rationale (Yew et al., 2023). Based on God’s teachings in the Bible, Christian ethics defines what is right and wrong. Since love is the central character of God, it should be a motivator for ethical behavior for Christian ethics. In the field of Christian ethics, studies have
shown that even business management have recommended the use of the Bible for the golden standard between morals and ethics (Cortez, 2023). A previous business leader and CEO of Alfac mentions the importance of faith during his tenure and how most of the organization’s principles in the employee ethics manual came from scripture that was used within firm (Hill, 2018). Throughout the world, approximately four trillion dollars are lost annually because of unethical decision-making in employee fraud which equates to a 5 percent loss of revenue for the standard company. Sin takes our focus off God letting us be our own god in control of the current situation for a small amount of time thus causing separation from God. The good news is that we are made in God’s image and can repeat of our sins (Hill, 2018). As Christians, we should always be on our guard “Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” ( New International Version, 1 Peter 5:8). Moreover, a firm will attempt to achieve its business objectives through a noticeable pattern of actions called a business strategy. These strategies influence the well-being of society and stakeholders because of their ethical implications that would hopefully create value for the firm’s stakeholders (Dacin et al., 2022). In conclusion, as scripture states, God created us in his own image which does separate us from other living creations ( New International Version, 1973/2005, Genesis 1:26-31). It is our responsibility as Christians to ethically do what is right even when being mocked by the world for not buying into the wrongdoings or unethical decisions. It is a privilege as Christians to honor our Lord in a holy way by being ethical in our decisions. Everyday decisions should be integrated with faith and rationale in pleasing our Lord.
