Reflection on suitability for the role of Accounts Payable at Octopus Energy. This reflective report identifies and discusses the knowledge and skills that has enabled me to choose to work for Octopus Energy. Also, by identifying the attributes of these skills, a case has been put forward for my suitability for the job position. The merits of these skills are supported by citing the work of experts and scholars in the field of Human Resources and Psychology. Moreover, the report critically analyses their limitations when contrasted to different characteristics of the job. Thereby, emphasises the need to cultivate a broader knowledge and skills to have a successful career. Among the benefits of learning self-awareness skill, is having the ability to monitor one’s emotions and reactions. Consequently, the skill can permit to recognise a person’s strengths, weakness, motivators and triggers, Grange, P (2020). Being progressively self-aware is helping me to discover the issues and topics that are important to my viewpoints, therefore, has facilitated my selection of the job position. Among the factors that made me choose to work for Octopus Energy, is because I value their ethical approach, moral responsibilities to the environment and their quest for renewable energy. Also, crucially, because they give the opportunity for workers to grow within the company by financially sponsoring employees to attain th e company’s accolade. Furthermore, it is giving me the energy to develop the skills needed to become an efficient worker. For instance, familiarising myself with numerous accounting software to adequately complete tasks. However, knowing just a person’s source of motivation alone does not remove completely the challenges that a newly graduate recruit may encounter. The employee is required to attain several additional skills in order to have a successful career development. For instance, at the early stage of the career ladder, as this job is for a junior position, I might be required to do laborious, repetitive and tedious tasks. Such as preparing payroll accounts, doing the
difficult credit receivables task, in which long intensive hours at work and awkward reporting to clients may be needed. Hence, the emotional intelligence skill that I have been taught could be a great use and help me to navigate adequately this phase of the job. In the view of (Goleman, 1996, pp 44-45), emotional intelligence enables a person to be socially aware and in this better managing social interactions. Therefore, emotional intelligence, can potentially permit me to keep developing whilst simultaneously deal to different challenges in various situations. Furthermore, recognising my feelings and being able to manage my emotions can help me to effectively liaise with clients. Consequently, gives me a clearer view of how I come across to others, facilitating my interaction with colleagues, and becoming a better contributor to the team. Moreover , Emotional Intelligence could give me the energy to produce good work even when faced with inevitable challenges such as peer pressures. Additionally, successfully managing working relationships not only benefits career development but also helps to recognise organisation code ethics. It demonstrates how people working in a profession should conduct and behave (Bassot, 2013, pp-71). This skill can help me to identify Octopus Energy’s code ethics, a useful guide on the attitude I should be adapting at work especially during the earliest days of my recruitment. Predominantly, I can anticipate the areas of the job that demands more attention and utilise my energy methodically to effectively execute expectations. Consequently, opening doors to new opportunities, promotions, and importantly I can use good working relationship to lift myself up when the job becomes challenging. Yet, occasionally the challenges might become formidable. For instance, among the duties in the job description, long intensive hours at work may be needed as well travelling long distances to meet companies’ clients. Prompting me to be resilient and adopt a “grow

mindset”. In the view of (Dweck 2017), personal resilience is the quality of being able to withstand times of difficulty or change in such a way that one can either cope reasonably at the time or bounce back afterwards (p11). By cultivating a resilient and a “grow mindset” , I should be able to reflect from faux pas, reorganise and focus on the job in hand. Moreover, I should benefit from the advantages of knowing how to conduct a productive career conversation. In the view of (Burgess, 2020) it is in the interest of all parties that career conversations take place. This is not an appraisal, it is an opportunity for a free, flowing discussion . As a result, I can be well informed on opportunities available, obtain an overview of the trajectory the company is taking. Subsequently, helping me to check whether the company’s future ambitions matches mine and if that is the case, set personal goals accordingly. Continually verifying whether the organisation aspirations are in line to mines can help to maintain a healthy harmony between professional career and personal life too. In the view of (Chatterjee 2019) When you feel better you live more . Nonetheless, the benefit of acquiring these skills might not come to a full effect without me recognising and accepting diversity and equality in today’s workplace. Members of an organisation, such as the one I have applied for, comprises of different upbringings and cultures. Therefore, as a member I should be able to adapt a mindset that is able to identify and value those differences. In the observation of Okoya (2020) , “d iversity in the workplace promotes the individuality within an organisation, acknowledging that every person can contribute with different, creative and new ideas and solutions . Consequently, I can learn and benefit from the new ideas, working techniques, resolutions and this synergy can potentially produce great work that can be gratifying and great source for success. In conclusion, self-awareness skill assisted my selection to choose to work for Octopus Energy and work out the skills I need to develop. Also, strengthening my emotional
intelligence, is giving me the capacity to recognise the state of my emotional condition and energy level in different circumstances. Furthermore, sustaining a good working relationship is an asset to have, especially when facing challenges such as work pressure. Additionally, I should take advantage from career conversations. Especially because Octopus Energy company gives employees the opportunity to climb the career ladder. These skills enhanced by the awareness of the contribution of diversity in the workplace should make me the right candidate for the job.
