Scientific Journal Article Review Part 1: Find an article on how humans impact the environment ( not how the environment impacts humans ). Provide the reference citation for that article below (2 points) and upload a full text PDF of the article to Canvas with this assignment . Madeja, J., Wacnik, A., Wypasek, E., Chandran, A., Stankiewicz, E. (20010). Integrated palynological and molecular analyses of late Holocene deposits from Lake Miłkowskie (NE Poland): Verification of local human impact on environment. Quaternary International, 220(1-2), 147-152. Part 2: Vocabulary- When you read journal articles you will likely come across unfamiliar words, acronyms, abbreviations or even words used in unfamiliar ways. Record these words and the definitions on this document. If you need more space, please add more rows or adjust the row height and width. In order to get full credit you will need to have at least 10 words on the list. (5 points) . Word Category (new word, unfamiliar context, acronym, abbreviation) Definition Taxa migration acronym Taxonomy Migration Vistula glaciation New word Major division of late Pleistocene deposits and time in western Europe Morainic plateau New word An accumulation of boulders, stones, or debris carried and deposited by glaciers. Findings of the research 4. Your personal thoughts/questions, and 5. Potential next steps for the research I only need 1-2 paragraphs for each item. You’ll get up to 2 points per item and 3 points for readability and grammar. 1. The purpose of the article is to show evidence of human activity in the area around Lake Milkowski. It also aims to show how the human activity corresponds to palynological and archaeological data. 2. To show the impact of humans, scientists used pollen analysis, charcoal analysis, and archaeological studies. Sediment sequence was studied by taking samples. First, silicates were removed from the sample. Then, indicator tablets were added to each sample to determine concentration of pollens, spores, and charcoals. 3. The scientists found that there was a series of anthropogenic disturbances between the periods of ca.2600 to ca.500 cal BP. They also found evidence that during those times, woodlands were almost completely cleared, and farming began. There was an increase of genetic material that correlated with increased levels of charcoal in the sediment. This indicates fires, likely caused by humans. 4. I hate that I actually found this study interesting, because it is literally scientists studying and doing tests on dirt from around a lake, but it is insane that they can get as much information as they can from just a few feet of dirt. 5. I honestly have no idea what the next steps are, but I read that they are using the results to determine population changes in the area over time.
