www.biologysimulations.com Natural Selection Name: Alyssa Shifflett, Delaney Gray Go to the Natural Selection Simulation on Biology Simulations Experimental Question: How does the environment affect the survival of these organisms? Procedure: 1. Click on “Introduction” to read about the simulation. 2. Write a hypothesis for each environment: a. Grassland: Neither blend in very well not allowing them to survive b. Mountain Rock: They gray will survive better because they will blend in with the rocks and they brown will stand out c. Desert Sand: The gray will stand out this time and then brown well blend in better 3. Run the simulation 3 times for each environment (desert, mountain, and grassland) and record your data. 4. Calculate and record averages for your data. 5. Complete the analysis and discussion questions.

www.biologysimulations.com 1. What could lead to different populations of the same species living in different environments? There could be a potential divergent and adaptive evolutionary change that is happening. This can result in populations evolving into separate species. 2. Grizzly bears and polar bears are very closely related, so much so that they can reproduce to form hybrid offspring. Use your understanding of natural selection to describe how polar bears became a separate classification from the grizzly. This most likely happened because of their ability to survive because of color. There was some sort of mutation that changed the color of the bear and allowed them to survive. There could have been a group of bears that migrated up north and found a better environment to survive in. 3. Describe how grizzly and polar bear evolution may be affected by climate change. Polar bears are designed for colder weather and they aren’t able to survive, because of polar ice caps melting seals aren’t around and the polar bears aren’t able to hunt for food and survive. The grizzly bears are doing okay because they aren’t reliant on something that is currently diminishing unlike the polar bears with ice caps.
