AST 201 FINAL ASSIGNMENT Due: Friday. Apr. 24, 2020 at 5 pm Please submit electronically via Quercus Student name: Sara Zawahid Student number: 1006308504 Part 1 – Short Answer Questions Total: 20 marks Question 1: a) [3 marks] The spectral type of this star is A. Stars in class A have spectra with strong hydrogen absorption lines and no molecular absorption lines. Stars of this class are also found on rhe main sequence as well. b) [3 marks] Since this star is in the main sequence, the next phase of its life will start once it finishes fusing hydrogen molecules and forming helium in its core. Then the core collapses onitself, turning into a sub giant star, then it becomes a red giant star. It becomes cooler, as a red giant, then becomes a supernovae. Finally it will end its life as a white dwarf. c) [2 marks] Yes, these mesurements are consistant with Kepler’s Law. Kepler’s Third Law states that more distant plants orbit slower than closer ones. The third planet is the furthest from the star with 8.2 AU from the star and has an orbital period of 3.5 years, which follows Kepler’s Third Law. The other planets with a lower AU have lower orbital periods than the furthest planet. Thus, are consistent with Kepler’s Law. d) [2 marks] Yes, these measurments are consistent with the Milky Way having a significant dark matter compenent.
Question 2: a) [1 mark] The normalised apparent brightness of my galaxy would decrease. b) [2 marks] You would get emmision lines on this spectrum by coressponding the amount of energy that is emmited . Below is an example of a hydrogen atom. - Electron - Proton c) [1 mark] The wavelength on the galaxy spectrum is about 7950. So, the difference would be 1387. 7950 - 6563 = 1387. d) [1 mark] The line shifted to longer wavelengths than we see on Earth. e) [1 mark] z = (7950 – 6563) ÷ 6563 = 0.211 f) [1 mark] This relationship between the distance and the redshift tell us about how the Universe is expanding.
g) [1 mark] Hubble’s Law supports the Big Bang model of cosmology as it states that the universe has a redshift so it is expanding which makes it move away from itself. h) [2 marks] Other observations that support the Big Bang model are the cosmic microwave background radiation and the fact that there is an abundance of hydrogen, helium, deuterium, and lithium.
