ASTR 1200-001 Homework Set 9 (40 Points)
Assigned on Thursday December 2, 2021
Due Thursday December 9, 2021, at 2:20pm
Question 1 – Dark clouds in Venus (10 Points):
Read the following science news item:
https://www.space.com/venus-giant-dark-cloud-infrared-study
•
Find and cite the relevant scientific paper.
McGouldrick, K., Peralta, J., Barstow, J. K., & Tsang, C. C. (2021). Using VIRTIS
on Venus Express to constrain the properties of the giant dark cloud
observed in images of Venus by IR2 on Akatsuki.
The Planetary Sci-
ence Journal
,
2
(4), 153.
https://doi.org/10.3847/psj/ac0e39
•
Who is the lead author of the study? Who are they? What is their ex-
pertise?
Kevin McGouldrick is the lead author and he is a planetary atmospheric sci-
entist at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics at CU Boulder.
•
In which journal was the study published?
The Planetary Science Journal
•
In 2-3 sentences, explain
in your own words
, what the study found and
why it was
significant.
The study done by McGouldrick and others regarding the Giant Dark Cloud
found that it affects the ratio of water vapor and sulfuric acid in the clouds.
Using the Visible and Infrared Thermal Imaging Spectrometer (VIRTIS) the
study also found that the Giant Dark Cloud is affecting the altitude of clouds
and the size of the particles within them. This study is significant because
learning from the Giant Dark Cloud can help us better understand the devel-
opments in Earth’s atmosphere.
Question 2 – Dust around the sun (10 Points):
Read the following science news item:

discover-river- dust-around-sun
•
Find and cite the relevant scientific paper.
Pusack, A., Malaspina, D. M., Szalay, J. R., Bale, S. D., Goetz, K., MacDowall,
R. J., & Pulupa, M. (2021). Dust directionality and an anomalous inter-
planetary dust population detected by the Parker Solar Probe.

•
Who is the lead author of the study? Who are they? What is their ex-
pertise?
Anna Pusack is the lead author and she is an undergraduate research assis-
tant at CU Boulder and her expertise is in Astrophysical and Planetary Sci-
ences.
•
In which journal was the study published?
The Planetary Science Journal
•
In 2-3 sentences, explain
in your own words
, what the study found and
why it was
significant.
The study done by Pusack and others found streams of zodiacal dust, that al-
most appeared to flow out. What this mean for the future is that it can lead
us to learn how our solar system formed and how others in the universe
could be as well.
Question 3 (20 Points):
Find an astronomy-related science news item of your own. Read it carefully
and find the relevant scientific paper on which it is based.
•
Find and cite the relevant scientific paper.
Farnham, T. L., Kelley, M. S., & Bauer, J. M. (2021). Early activity in Comet
C/2014 UN271 bernardinelli–Bernstein as observed by Tess.
The Plane-
tary Science Journal
,
2
(6), 236.
https://doi.org/10.3847/psj/ac323d
•
Who is the lead author of the study? Who are they? What is their ex-
pertise?
Tony Farnham is the lead author and he is Principal Research Scientist at the
University of Maryland and his expertise is comets, centaurs, and
transneptunian
objects.
•
In which journal was the study published?
The Planetary Science Journal
•
In 2-3 sentences, explain
in your own words
, what the study found and
why it was
significant.
In this study Fanrham and his associates found that comet
Bernardinelli–
Bernstein is one of the farthest comets in which preperihelion activity was ongoing, among other
things. What their findings in the study mean for the future is that either the comets orientation of
its spin axis or the elongation of its nucleus will be put under stress.
