Lab 3 Sky Map in Real Time 1
Purpose: To learn how a Sky Map can be used to locate and identify interesting constellations and stars in the night sky at a given time on a given evening.
Theory: A sky map in real time is a map from which a user can easily locate the main stars, constellations, and planets. Such a map can be adjusted to any time of night on any given date at a given latitude. At latitudes in the northern hemisphere one will also observe that all the sky appears
to rotate around Polaris, the north star. Moreover the sky map shows that the stars rise and set which means that the appearance of the sky changes throughout the night.
Some interesting groups of constellations on a sky map are:
Zodiac Constellations: Constellations that surround the circumference of the
ecliptic (path of the Sun’s apparent motion). The zodiac constellations are specifically: Capricornus, Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Ophiucius,
and Sagittarius
.
North Circumpolar Constellations: Constellations that surround the North Celestial Pole where the star Polaris is currently located. The North Circumpolar constellations are specifically: Ursa Major, Ursa Minor, Cassiopeia, Cepheus, Draco
, and Camelopardalis
Some interesting stellar groups (asterisms) on a sky map are:
The asterism that consists of Deneb, Virgo
, and Altair
The asterism that consists of Betelgeuse, Procyon,
and Sirius
The asterism that consists of Regulus, Arcturus,
and Spica
The asterism that consists of Rigel, Sirius, Procyon, Castor and Pollux, Capella
, and Aldebaran
.
