Informative Speech OUTLINE Specific Purpose Statement: To inform my audience on space and a few things in it such as the Milky Way Galaxy, multiverses and other universes, and other galaxies besides the one we inhabit. Thesis: Let’s investigate space by discussing the Milky Way Galaxy and other universes/galaxies that exist or may exist. INTRODUCTION Attention Gaining Device: Have you ever looked into the sky and examined the stars, and ended up thinking about how big space really is? Have you ever wondered how many galaxies or universes there may be outside of the Milky Way and the universe it is in? Relevance Statement: The Milky Way is the galaxy that our solar system exists in. Our galaxy is approximately 100,000 light-years across, and there are roughly 2 trillion different unique galaxies in our universe. Credibility Statement: Although I am still young, and only a junior in high school, I have researched space for years and have always found it extremely interesting. Preview Statement: Today, I am going to talk to you about the basics of space, the galaxy we live in, and the universe that our galaxy is a part of. BODY 1 1. You may be wondering, “What is so interesting about space and our galaxy?” Well, space pretty much makes up everything, and it is endless. Space is the boundless three-dimensional extent in which objects and events have relative position and direction. There have been many advancements as far as space exploration in the past 50-60 years. 53 years ago, on July 20 th , 1969, the first human set foot on the moon, when the U.S. launched the famous Apollo 11, and planted the American Flag on the surface. More recently, 17 years ago, on January 14 th , 2005, a probe of the Cassini-Huygens spacecraft became the first spacecraft to land on the moon of another planet, being one of Saturn's moons named Titan. Then, just 3 years ago, on January 1 st , 2019, the U.S. made the advancement of exploring the furthest object yet by a spacecraft, it is called 2014 MU69. 2. Although we are in the only officially named “Solar System”, there are thousands of other planets in our galaxy that are also orbiting stars. The closest star to our sun is trillions of miles away, which shows how big our solar system really is. One planet, technically named HD 40307g, is nicknamed “Super Earth”. It is 8 times the size of Earth and has a much stronger gravitational pull than Earth. It is said that you would weigh twice as much on “Super Earth” than you do here. In another planetary system labeled as TRAPPIST-1, there are 7 earth sized planets, that are allegedly covered by liquid water.
3. As space exploration advances, there is a lot of potential to discover crazy things and reveal a lot of information on space. There have already been tons of cool things revealed and many predictions made on events that could occur in the future in space. Scientific research in space and events that have already occurred have told us a lot about our Earth. It is assumed that comets, which are made of rock and ice, colliding with primordial Earth are what supplied most of our planet's water. Scientists predict that approximately every 100 million years, an asteroid will collide with Earth. They are constantly working on new inventions and exploring more, so they will be able to prevent catastrophe. As we progress in more and more areas of deep space exploration, scientists predict that in the very near future we will discover evidence of life in space. BODY 2 1 . Although, the Milky Way Galaxy is roughly 100,000 light-years across, our galaxy is considered a normal sized galaxy and there are many others that are much bigger as well and some that are much smaller. Ours is not even considered a big galaxy. There are close to 2 trillion galaxies in our universe. Our universe has an estimated radius of 46.5 billion light-years. The largest galaxy in the observable universe is known as IC 1101, and it is 2000 times larger than our Milky Way Galaxy. It is an estimated 6 million light-years in diameter. New educated assumptions say that there are 40 quintillion black holes populating the universe, and scientists say that it makes up about 1% of all normal matter. 2. The Milky Way can be described as a massive collection of stars, dust, and gases. It is also referred to as the spiral galaxy, and if you could view it from top or bottom, it would resemble a spinning pinwheel. If there was no black hole in the Milky Way, it would start to break apart. The black hole is considered the Center of Mass of the galaxy. Even if you could travel at the speed of light, it would take you 25,000 years to get to the center of the Milky Way. BODY 3 1. Technically we describe the term “universe” as “all there is” or “all that exists” and if we go by that, then there can only be one universe, but if we describe it as “all we can see”, then other universes may exist as well. Scientists refer to the possibility of multiple universes as the “multiverse”. It has been discovered that the universe can be divided into multiple different regions, and these regions may have different laws of physics, some being habitable and some being inhabitable. A scientist made a drawing of several bubbles, expanding from one another and each bubble is a universe. The “multiverse”, which is the collection of all the universes, is incomprehensibly vast. CONCLUSION Brake light: In conclusion,
Summary: We have gone over the basics of space and what you should know about it. We reviewed the universe and the things that are in it. We went over our galaxy that we live in, and a few contents of it. We talked about scientific research being done on the topic of the “multiverse” and went over the potentials space exploration. If anyone desires to seek out additional information, you can easily search the internet. End: Thank you for your attention and your time.
