Assignment 4: Sunspots
For this Assignment, you will monitor sunspots on the sun via online websites:
SOHO website: http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/home.html
Big Bear Solar Observatory: http://www.bbso.njit.edu/

Look at the images of the Sun in different wavelengths on these sites. You should be able to
see sunspots that are visible on the surface of the sun. Day-to-day observations of sunspots
reveal changes in their locations that are due to the rotation of the Sun on its axis. The Sun
rotates approximately once every 27 days at its equator and once in about 34 days at higher
latitudes. The difference in rotation rates shows that the Sun is gaseous.
Make (6) observations of the sun via the websites given above over the course of a month. Record sunspot observations and the number of sunspots observed in the table on the Observing Record Form for Assignment 4 - Unit B.

: Save this form to your computer and then fill in your data and observations in the
appropriate places. For each observation, list the date, approximate time, what was
observed, and the results of the observations.
Sunspot Observations
Enter any sunspot observations, even if no sunspots were seen, in the following table.
Include any observations from the SOHO website (enter SOHO as the instrument) or the Big
Bear Solar Observatory (enter BBSO as the instrument). The table can be expanded to more
lines if necessary. If you made any observations on your own (not SOHO or BBSO ones),
write a brief paragraph below the table describing how the observations were made.
Include an image from the observatory website for every observation you use. Note: some
images are only updated once a day. For these it is ok to say the time is unknown.
