This research project details the ways in which GIS software is used by the National Park
Service to protect Oregon Caves National Monument and its resources. GIS software and cave management software like COMPASS have been used to produce hazard and fragility maps to categorize areas of the cave into caving zones. They have also been invaluable for keeping track of paleontological resources by creating a GIS layer of sites from survey measurements. Managing and retrieving site photos for impact monitoring has also been improved by sorting photos in a GIS layer by location. GIS has enabled the National Park Service to plan tours of the caves while monitoring and limiting visitor impacts. The research provides a detailed analysis of the uses of GIS in the Oregon Caves
conservation efforts.
