2-2 Project Proposal: Choose a Topic Richard Davis Southern New Hampshire University HUM 102 - Self Society and Humanities Monica Alaniz-Mcginnis January 21, 2024
HUM 102 Module Two Project Proposal Part One: Choose the Creative Works 1. Describe the two creative works . Feel free to elaborate, but make sure you include these three items: A. I have decided to focus on the subject of mental health for my research topic. B. The two creative pieces that I have selected are “Invisible Scars,” a poem written by Alex Duffey, and “Silent Shout,” an artwork created by Eva Charkiewicz. C. I chose these two art forms because of their relatability to anyone who experiences mental health challenges, including my fiancé who suffers from mental health disorder. “Silent Shouts” resonates with the emotions she expresses during depressive episodes and anxiety attacks. Additionally, having experienced the pain of losing our daughter in 2021, I personally can relate to the concept of “Invisible Scars”. I believe it is crucial to increase awareness about the struggles people face with mental health in order to provide the necessary support for their healing and well-being. 2. Describe how the chosen creative works can be used to understand the topic. A. How do the different humanities subject areas (visual, literary, and performing arts) approach the topic? The chosen creative works, “Invisible Scars” by Alex Duffey (a poem) and “Silent Shout” by Eva Charkiewicz (an artwork), provide different perspectives on the topic of mental
health. The literary art form of the poem explores the internal emotional experiences and struggles through the power of words, while the visual art form of the artwork captures and expresses emotion through visual representation. These different humanities subject areas approach the topic of mental health by using their unique mediums to convey and evoke emotions, allowing individuals to connect and understand the experience of those facing mental health challenges from different angles. The visual arts offer a visual understanding of the topic, while the literary art uses language to articulate the feelings associated with mental health issues. Both subject areas provide valuable insights into the complexities of mental health, enhancing our understanding and empathy towards those affected. I included both works below so you don’t have to search for them. Creative Work #1 - “Invisible Scars” by Alex Duffey Thoughts in my head that no one can see Monsters in my room, how did they come to be? The lights are on, but for some reason it's still dark no one can see my invisible scars People can't see it so they don't believe it A ton of invisible scars that I bleed with When I fly off the handle, you'll say I should have talked and opened that door But when I talk about my mental health, it's something you ignore I'm being bullied by a mental illness called Depression

I'm being laughed at by anxiety I'm trying to provide answers for the hundreds of questions In a room full of noise, I stand in the corner quietly Hands sweating when I'm in public I don't like strangers getting close I've been stabbed in the back by people I hugged with Lost in a lot of pain but I'm still trying to find hope I made plans to go out, but I don't have the strength to leave my bed Depression beats me down so much I can't get it out of my head I'm trying to be stronger but I feel weak plus anytime I fight back its still me who bleeds Mental health is ignored because people can't see it We get ignored when we talk about it, that's why we keep it a secret The lights are on but for some reason it's still dark We're trying our best when we deal with our invisible scars
Creative Work #2 - “Silent Shout” by Eva Charkiewicz
