Project Part One: Artifacts and Theme Selection Artifact One: Song named “Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story” by Jedi Mind Tricks (2006) This is a song that is by Jedi Mind Tricks vocalist Vinnie Paz and a guest verse by rapper R.A. the Rugged Man, that tells of the horrible destruction and innocent lives affected by war. Although this was written in 2006 about the Vietnam War, all war is the same, and many innocent people are affected by it. The song is a first-person narrative telling the story of a young confused and scared soldier in the United States military. After seeing the corruption and carnage of battle, he begins to question the real motives behind the Vietnam War (“Uncommon Valor: A Vietnam Story”, 2023). This song paints a picture of the horrors that people encounter during war and the aftermath of the entire ordeal. R.A. the Rugged Man actually recounts the war experience of his father through his verse in the song. His father is a highly decorated war hero who years later has children severely and mentally handicapped because of his exposure to Agent Orange (Kweli, 2021). I chose this song because ever since the first time I heard this song, the message I got from it was so loud. We are all pawns to the “rich man”, and for as long as humans have been living, we have been fighting wars for these men. So many innocent lives have been affected by these wars, and for what? Artifact Two: Sculpture “Consequences of War” by Peter Paul Rubens (1638-39) As I was searching for artifacts to go along with the song that I chose (searching for innocent lives affected by war) I came across this painting called “Consequences of War”. After
reading more about what the painting was about, it is exactly what I was searching for. This painting is the perfect depiction of what the costs of war are. The painting depicts the people who caused the war, the people fighting the war, and the innocent people affected by the war. According to Hoakley, there is a woman who is supposed to be “Harmony” who is depicted with a broken lute beside her which is supposed to symbolize the discord brought by war (2017). Florence states how there is a strong diagonal leading from the lower left to the upper right that creates a sense of the inevitability of war and how it is an unstoppable force (2020). All of these people are depicted under a stormy sky, which speaks to the overwhelming tragedy and horrors that come with war. So many things are going on in this painting, and I cannot wait to learn of them through research and study of this painting. Common Theme The theme within both artifacts is the horrors of war and the unimaginable consequences that surround it. Innocent lives are lost because of disagreements between two parties. This is something that has been going on since the beginning of time and it is inevitably going to happen again, probably many times over. Reflection Although I cannot say that I have personally been a soldier in war, or witnessed war firsthand, I can say that I am affected by war almost daily. Since 9/11 (the first war I was old enough to comprehend) it seems like there have been so many conflicts between countries and the end result is normally war. What comes with war besides innocent lost lives? Inflation comes

with war which affects the worldwide economy. Constant horror and fear of “could we be next” or “who are we making mad, will they come after us?”. These are things I am sure many people fear on a daily basis. And, I have to say emotionally war takes a toll on so many people. They lose loved ones, their homes, everything they know, and anyone with any type of compassion for other humans can not imagine someone going through this type of thing. I know that it breaks. My heart aches on a daily basis knowing what the people in Ukraine are dealing with on a daily basis because Russia decided they wanted to invade them. War affects so many people, not just the ones in the middle of it. And I believe that both of these pieces of art depict that wonderfully in their own unique ways!
