Week 2 Assignment: Essay Painting Analysis & Reflection
Figure 1
Jammin' at the Savoy 1981-1982
Romare Bearden
3
Explain the artistic movement associated with the work of art.
Romare Bearden created the painting titled "Jammin' at the Savoy" during the years 1981
and 1982. The photo shows a band during a rehearsal, with each member playing their
instrument to contribute to the overall sound and fill the space with it. In this work, Bearden uses
color combinations that are so arresting that they almost seem to move in time to the music. The
musicians play as if it were just themselves and their own instruments, which demonstrates how
much they enjoy the sound that they create. Bearden's artwork was heavily influenced by jazz
and blues music, both of which were important to the growth of African American culture in the
20th century (Maitlin, 2020). His own experiences, as well as those in literature and society,
served as wellsprings of inventiveness for him.
Describe the artist's style (How is the artist unique within the movement?)
Bearden works in a variety of mediums, including oils, watercolors, collage, and
monotypes, among others. Most of his works are of layered collages that are composed of foil,
periodicals, posters, and many other images (Cole 2014). The creative individual's "art
transcends categories by fusing imagery of black life and circumstance with experience that is
universally relatable" (nga.gov). The pursuit on his part to depict reality in an artistic manner
served as the inspiration for his cubist painting technique. Because he worked with such a wide
variety of mediums, his artistic technique came to be known as "patch cubism," after the phrase
that was invented to describe it. Cubism was initially conceived in 1907 by Pablo Picasso and
Georges Braque (Tate.org).
Examine in some depth the influences that shaped the work
