Exploration Document Draft Joseph Okupniak Southern New Hampshire University HUM200: Applied Humanities Jason Flynn September 24, 2023 1
Exploration Document Draft Cultural Artifacts My first work is the Bust of Nefertiti. This piece is painted stucco over limestone and is an unfinished portrait of the queen. My second work is the Pensive Bodhisattva. This piece is a Korean piece made of bronze. It represents Maitreya bodhisattva. Common Theme A common theme between both of these pieces is femineity. Both pieces show a beautiful woman. Another theme could be one of religion. I know that the Pharoh's of Ancient Egypt were consider a god. The Pensive looks to be a statue of a goddess. Personal Experience I can identify with the religion. I believe in God but still understand that there are many religions out there. It is not my job to judge on which is right and wrong, but having a belief in a higher power is important. Profession I consider my own mortality and how we are all ultimately going to die as I continue to mature and grow my own family. Since I am mortal and death will eventually find me, I now have to consider how any activities I take would affect my own mental and physical health before I take them. I must do this for the sake of my own family, therefore I must do my best to avoid death. Humanities Resources My first resource talks about the struggle to get the bust back.My second resource talks about how the bust became a symbol in the art community. My third resource talks about how the Pensive made its way in becoming a treasure. Historical Context 2
Nefertiti, who lived in the 14th century BC, was Amenhotep IV's primary consort and afterwards Akhenaten. There aren't many written sources that detail her ancestry, marriage, family life, political standing, and demise. Similarities and Differences These two pieces have a common topic that represents feminism and physical beauty in relation to cultural and societal norms. Thutmose aimed to express and preserve the enduring beauty of Queen Nefertiti in the "Bust of Nefertiti." In Ancient Egyptian culture, physical characteristics and regal stature were highly admired and prized, both in this life and, more significantly, in the next. Medium Both sexes enhanced their physical attractiveness by donning cosmetics, perfumed oils, and jewelry containing valuable stones. Deities had a significant role in the value of physical and outward beauty, and their cultural belief system placed a strong emphasis on the continuity of life after death. Because it was believed that they would need and utilize them in the afterlife, the departed would have jewels, brushes, and other personal items placed with them in their coffins. Thesis Statement Still working on one but will have on ready for my rough draft. Audience My ideal audience would be people who are interested in the history of ancient Egyptians. Also people who like to see women in power. Message To tailor my presentation for my audience and make it more understandable and relatable, I will try to connect the beauty evident in my works. 3
