Instructions:
For each ‘Theme & Scene,’ think about what the film or the filmamaker is trying to say about the
protagonists or life in general. What is the film was trying to “teach” you? (e.g., that crime never pays; that growing up
can be a difficult but necessary journey; that you have to fix your mistakes; that one person can change the world, etc.).
▪
Theme:
Be specific and detailed in your identification of the theme. A key theme in a fatalistic
film noir
like
Out
of the Past
is (as the title suggests) coming to terms with the consequences of what you have done with your life
and having to right the wrongs you have committed.
▪
Scene:
Offer an in-depth analysis of one scene that you feel develops the key theme you have identified. Be
specific and detailed. Yes, describe what happens in the scene but, more importantly, think about
how
and
why
those things happen. How does the filmmaker develop the theme through framing, editing, music, dialogue,
movement, motifs, etc.?

Identify a key theme from the film and then, using one scene, explain how the theme is developed in the film.
[100-150 words]
One key theme in the Jurassic Park film is the idea of playing God and the consequences that come with it.
The film raises the question of whether it is ethical or wise to bring extinct animals back to life through
genetic cloning and explores the potential dangers that come with attempting to control and manipulate
nature. One scene that develops this theme is when the character Dr. Ian Malcolm, played by Jeff Goldblum,
has a discussion with John Hammond, the creator of Jurassic Park. Hammond is trying to convince Malcolm
and the other characters of the park's safety and how he has taken measures to prevent the dinosaurs from
breeding. However, Malcolm argues that "life finds a way" and that the dinosaurs will inevitably adapt and
overcome the constraints placed upon them by their human creators. This scene highlights the film's central
theme by portraying the arrogance of humans in their attempt to control nature. Malcolm warns Hammond of
the risks of playing God and creating life, and the idea of the dinosaurs adapting and thriving despite the
human efforts to control them is a powerful symbol of nature's resilience and power. The scene also serves to
foreshadow the chaos that ensues when the dinosaurs inevitably break free from their captivity, showing the
audience that the consequences of playing God can be disastrous. Through this scene and others like it, the
film explores the complex ethical and moral implications of genetic engineering and the consequences of
humans attempting to manipulate the natural world.

Identify another key theme and then, using one scene, explain how the theme is developed.
[100-150 words]
Another key theme in Jurassic Park is the idea of the importance of respecting and preserving the natural
world. Throughout the film, the characters come to realize that the dinosaurs are not just scientific curiosities
or sources of profit, but living beings with their own rights and needs. The film argues that humans have a
responsibility to protect and preserve the natural world and its inhabitants, rather than exploiting them for our
own purposes. One scene that develops this theme is when Dr. Grant, played by Sam Neill, first sees the
Brachiosaurus in the park. As he and his colleague Dr. Sattler watch in awe, the enormous creature reaches up
to eat from a tree and emits a gentle, lowing sound. The scene is shot in a way that emphasizes the majesty
and beauty of the animal, as well as the wonder and reverence of the characters witnessing it. This scene
highlights the theme of respecting and preserving nature by showing the audience the dinosaurs not as
monsters or threats, but as magnificent creatures that deserve our awe and respect. The gentle sounds and
movements of the Brachiosaurus suggest that these animals are more than just genetic experiments or
entertainment, but living beings with their own needs and desires. The scene also suggests that humans have
a responsibility to protect and preserve these creatures, rather than exploiting them for profit or
entertainment.
