Tahj Hugley Professor Powell Art, Society, and Culture 01 December 2021 Selfies, Authenticity, and Culture African culture is beautiful and thriving of beliefs and community, but in museums they are depicted as otherwise. African art in museums should return to Africa and be out of the hands of the people who suppressed them to begin with. Museums that revolve around African culture were mostly looted and robed by others, to later be put on display to show off the rich history of it. Pacific museums don’t necessarily display looted art to display, they get the artifacts that were already put on display and preserve them to preserve the history of these people and places. African art and artifacts shouldn’t be displayed if they had to steal them in order to do so, they should instead be sent back to where they originated and be put on display there to recognize the culture there. Instead of talking away their culture it should be properly recognized as they were meant to be when created. Pacific art is great the way it is, there are some things that a sacred and shouldn’t be tampered with such as King Tuts tomb. So instead of ruining the culture that is there out of curiosity it should be left alone to show respect for the past. If it is necessary to display these artifacts it should once again be left as they way, it was when it was discovered.

Many people fly out to certain places just to see these artifacts and it shouldn’t have to change just because they are located elsewhere. If the African artifacts were to be moved to Africa, it shouldn’t be a hassle to travel there to see it as they would to travel anywhere else. Pacific art is already placed in many of their founding places, and it has been successful, so it should be the same for Africa. Therefore, the people that the culture belongs too shouldn’t have to go out of their way to see their own history, vise versa for Pacific art.
