Discussion 2 - Week 3 Success Factors There are many factors that lead to success in the classroom, whether it be in a traditional or online setting. Setting goals you can accomplish, creating a supporting environment, appropriate plannning, and following through with your plans will all be of benefit as you work toward becoming a successful doctoral student. Identify an article from the Walden Library or an accredited college or university on the topic of critical success factors as a doctoral learner, and determine how the content aligns with the following personal variables. Refer to your course text as well, to address the following topics: Your plans for prioritizing responsibilities Your currently available resources for successfully achieving program objectives Your intellectual skills and traits inherent in doctoral study Your perspectives/thinking as to how the expectations in the PhD program are different from bachelors, masters, or professional certifications’ expectations.
The PhD in Management in Leadership and Organizational Change has a primary focus but a different meaning for everyone in the program I believe. The motivating factor that prompted us to begin this journey will be the key of persistence we will all need to remember as we press forward. Going forward it will be important to not only your abilities and limitations, but know how to find the balance to know when to move beyond them. Wellington, et al (2006) states” students’ motivations for pursing a doctorate are either intrinsic or extrinsic. Intrinsic as a qualification for means of professional initiation and Extrinsic as a means of career development and enhancement.” With that premise my motivation would be extrinsic as I am looking to utilize my PhD to not only become a change agent but also as career advancement tool. Persistence can be defined as “the quality that allows someone to continue doing something or trying to do something even though it is difficult or opposed by other people.” According to Spaulding, et al (2012) the student related factors associated with persistence are demographic variables, personal attributes, responsibilities and coping skills. I agree that these will be key areas we will need to focus on as this will be a long lonely journey. My plan for prioritizing my responsibilities is to plan my schedule to include set aside time daily to study and time to distress. Since I am working full time and have my family obligations this may be hard in the beginning, but if I remain persistent and remember my motivations for wanting this degree I should be able to do this. The resources currently available for successfully achieving program objectives are my support system for encouragement, feedback from faculty and my peers to assist me with my writing as I prepare for my dissertation and the wealth of information on the Walden University site to assist me from the Library to the Writing Center. The intellectual skills and traits inherent in doctoral study I think will be to utilize our independent knowledge base while at the same time take advantage of the information available in the courses, webinars and residencies to help formulate your doctoral work. The Bachelor’s degree is the first step in higher education, the expectations is just to finish and find a good job, while a Masters is a way to specialize in an area of study that you want as a career path. As a PhD I think it narrows the chosen area of specialization so that you can become an expert in that field, a scholar practitioner. References
