Harriet Creyer Module 2 : Project Proposal Southern New Hampshire University
The Houses of Parliament, London UK For my project I have chosen to look further into the houses of Parliament in the United Kingdom. 1. Select a cultural work  The Houses of Parliament also known as the Palace of Westminster sits with the City of Westminster in London along the River Thames; it serves as the meeting place for both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. 2. After choosing a cultural work to evaluate, answer the following questions: What characteristics or elements of the work stand out to you? One of the things that stands out the most to me is the vast size of the buildings. What was originally established as a ‘The Hall’ in 1097. The intricate detail of the building and the way it was designed clearly shows it was originally planned for royalty. What do you think the creator wanted to express? The architect  Charles Barry   won with a design for new buildings in the  Gothic Revival   style, specifically inspired by the English  Perpendicular Gothic   style of the 14th–16th centuries…. Augustus Pugin , a leading authority on Gothic architecture and style, assisted Barry and designed the interior of the Palace. Christian themes were integrated into the design. Construction started in 1840 and lasted for 30 years, suffering great delays and cost overruns, as well as the death of both leading architects; works for the interior decoration continued intermittently well into the 20th   century.” (Palace of Westminster 2022)
The creator was trying to portray the grand style at the time, and it has now become a timely classic in the way it looks and blends with the modern-day architecture. Were they successful? Yes, I believe they were extremely successful with their vision. The vast number of buildings within the building itself creates a timeless British icon. With the reconstruction work that has been happening within the past few years to ensure the building remains as useful, safe and standing for many more years to come, the modern techniques into renovating have allowed them to explore the historical information that brought the design to life. 3. Next, select a cultural work that meets the conditions above but is from a culture unfamiliar to you. Reflect on the value or meaning of studying cultural works from different cultures. The Taj Mahal A Cultural work I am unfamiliar with is the Taj Mahal. By studying other cultural works and reflecting on their value, it allows us to learn and create a better understanding of the world around us and what has influenced our histories. 4. Evaluate the impact of diversity in the study of the humanities by considering the following: How does looking through the lens of the humanities affect your understanding of diverse cultural works and the reasons for their creation?

By looking through the humanities lens it allows me to have a better understanding towards other cultures and seeing the influences from their history allows us to see how their cultures have been created and how they are going. How could learning more about cultural works from other cultures equip you with skills or new perspectives for experiences in your life (work, community, family, and so on)? Learning more about other cultures allows us to have a more open mind and more of an acceptance towards others.
