Being creative in the things that an individual does, whether it is through the use of creative thinking, creative practice, or creative experience, is a major part of being a productive and functioning member of society. Artists need creativity in their process, but it is not exclusive to just those in the arts. Arts Integration definitely needs to be part of the curriculum of education as a whole, not just for the education of artists but across all levels of education. Arts Integration would be beneficial for all due to the effects that it could have on the brain of an individual through the use of creative thinking to problem solve, creative practice to approach the problem that needs solved in their own way of working, and through the use of creative experience to help foster the originality, imagination, and expression of an individual. Creative thinking is a vital part of problem solving when trying to create a solution that will not only work but will be effective and efficient as well. For example, if an individual were to want to go out fishing on the lake but their boat had a hole in it, they could use creative thinking to solve the problem and find a way to patch the hole and go fishing without fear of the boat sinking. They may do this by finding a way to fully seal the hole instead of potentially just using non-creative thinking and end up creating a quick fix where they would get out on the water and the boat would sink. Creative practice is also a vital part of the problem-solving process where an individual would approach a problem in their own unique way through their creative process with the support of their creative thinking.
How the boat problem could be solved in the previous paragraph would depend on what the individual’s own creative practice is that they do to solve problems. Some brainstorm through writing out ideas, some draw sketches, some attempt many different solutions until one actually works using trial and error. When entering their creative process, individuals who can creatively think, can usually grasp a deeper understanding of why the problem is happening instead of just trying to slap a band-aid on it. ““I have seen that children who participate in arts integration showed longer retention of concepts and found deeper meaning in the curriculum presented. Children can synthesize basic information and infer deeper meaning as to why things happen, not just spew back rote information” - Laura J. Roberts, teacher, Abingdon Elementary School, Arlington Public Schools, Virginia. (Silverstein & Layne, 2020)” Creative experience is a vital part of just being human, not just for problem solving, but in being oneself. Creative experiences help to learn how to use expression, imagination, and originality in everyday life and in the work that an individual does. It helps to give new perspectives through the use of the understanding of expressionism and also helps to improve the imaginative ability as well to be able to envision newer ways to see things. In the lesson of week 9, we learned about Fabienne Verdier and how she studied calligraphy in China with someone who had mastered the writing practices of the form. “Having immersed herself for ten years in another culture [Verdier studied calligraphy in China for ten years] and learned the
