Social Work Essay: Paraphrasing Practice
Grand Canyon University
UNV 510-O501: Introduction to Graduate Studies in Social
As a college student at the graduate level, knowing how to proficiently paraphrase is a necessity. Lasky (2023) defines paraphrasing as the “practice of restating another author’s thoughts in one’s own words”. You use the author’s thoughts and writing and create them into something of your own. You don’t change the meaning; you simply transform the words used to arrive there. In this paper through paraphrasing, you will read about all the tools available for writing an academic research paper, and the use of bias-free language while doing so. As a graduate student the in-depth study of your chosen field, the coursework, and the expectations increase from the undergraduate level. This is why it is crucial to familiarize yourself with the tools and services available to you. GCU has numerous ways to help you as you begin the journey of writing research papers. They offer the GCU Library, the Center for Learning and Advancement, academic advisors, and instructors that you can turn to for guidance.
And fortunately, all of these tools are available to you by simply logging onto your student portal. The GCU library has anything you may need during your graduate journey, it is filled with peer reviewed and scholarly resources where you can find journal articles, databases, books,
and more. There are tutorials and webinars to learn how to navigate the library, and you can message or call a GCU Librarian to ask for help should you feel stumped. They have all the tools
necessary to help you stay organized and focused (Mailander, 2022). Organization, prewriting, outlining, and brainstorming will all be useful while developing
writing assignments. Another great tool that you can use to develop thoughts, ideas, and questions is a research journal, this will allow you to investigate research topics while also finding the central focus of your research paper. When exploring topics you have no knowledge on, it is always wise to research, read up on the topic, and save your resources for future use. An additional tool is the use of outlining and concept mapping. Prepared with a basic understanding
of your central focus, you can start your outline by using your most prominent ideas. This will help you to organize your argument and supporting evidence while arranging everything by importance, with ideas and supporting details listed beneath each heading for topics and subtopics. With all of your ideas in order you can move on and begin working on your resources (Mailander, 2022).
Your resources and supporting data are crucial when writing at a graduate level. This is data that helps to support your stance and needs to be relevant to your topic of choice. A useful tool while searching for resources is the use of keywords that apply to your topic, this allows the search engine to amplify results and provide you with enough resources. During your research journey it is important to remember that you will constantly discover new articles or have new ideas, remaining adaptable is important. Once you have all your tools and ideas ready and are ready to begin writing, the structure will be similar to your undergraduate experience, but the level of writing will be more thorough (Mailander, 2022). You will also need to pay attention to your bias and the language you use while writing. The language used when writing about particular groups or individuals has to be thought out and used correctly. A tool that may help is reaching out to specific organizations and respectfully asking which terms or pronouns they prefer to be called, and what language can be used to describe them. This helps to remain professional and respectful of other’s feelings. Two more tools that can be applied while writing is person-first language or identity-first language. Using person-first language allows you to put the individual over any disability or illness that they may have, and identity-first language allows the individual to combine their disability into their identity on their own terms. When describing an individual, it is always better to use the pronouns that they personally prefer, and only use “he” and “she” if they indicated it is okay to
