Grit: The Power and Passion of Perseverance
After watching this video, what does Grit mean to you as a student or a leader? What are your thoughts on Duckworth's assertions?
After watching the video “Grit: The Power and Passion of Perseverance”, as a current student “Grit” in my eyes means to have self-motivation, determination, and a positive mindset when setting goals and accomplishing them. Having “Grit” mentality allows you to face obstacles and still accomplish the goals you have set. Duckworth stated, “the ability to learn is not fixed and can change with effort”, I agree with this statement because you need a growth mindset in order to be successful with accomplishing your goals. (Duckworth, 2013) It is important that I teach my daughter to be gritty because I want her to understand her abilities and even if she fails along the way that she can continue to accomplish anything she is determined in doing. I did not agree with Duckworth’s statement “Household income can dictate a child’s ability to learn”. (Duckworth, 2013) I was brought up in poverty, parents were never home and neither of them have a high school diploma. I graduated high school with a 3.7 and went to a 4-year university and am now in a master’s program. I was determined to do better and not allow my future family to live the way I did growing up. My upbrings taught me that you can do anything you put your mind to, you just have to put in the effort and adapt to changes.
