Family Development Credential ® Program Activities to Extend Learning (AEL) and Skills Practice Plan (Include with the portfolio) Name: Chapter: Activities to Extend Learning (AELs) - Select one activity (questions-number) in this chapter from three (3) different learning objectives: (letters): (letter & number) – i.e. A3, B4 and F5 – all parts of multipart questions should be answered. 1. 2. 3. Other When you respond, please write out the questions as written in the workbook, followed by a complete answer. Activities to Extend Learning (AELs) – A different learning objective from the three AELs must be addressed in your chosen skills practice, for a total of four learning objectives from this chapter. Question #1 __B1__ Type out the question you selected first and then your answer: How do you define culture? How did your family describe its culture to you during your childhood? How much reliable information do you have about the culture of your ancestors? Culture to me means ethnic heritage. These elements consist with race, language, gender, sexual orientation, class, family form, religious, feelings, attitude and beliefs. We bring aspects of others backgrounds to our own cultures over our life span. One of the culture moments in my childhood was having Sunday dinners and holiday celebrations with all my family members. I do not have any reliable information towards culture ancestors. Question #2 __D1___ Type out the question you selected first and then your answer: How comfortable are you working with men (if you are a female family worker) or with women (if you are a male family worker)? 5 Tiffany Pannell H3 D1 B1
I really do not have a preference really but if I had to choose I will pick a female worker because I can relate to a female worker better than a male worker. Based on my personal experience, the few times I worked in a female-dominated environment it makes the environment livelier, more jovial, and more social and more fun to be in. Question #3 _____ Type out the question you selected first and then your answer: What are some ways that you, as family development worker, can help families you work with overcome the barriers discussed in the chapter? I think to talk and discuss the language and customs of other people. I would want to make things familiar as possible by getting to know many different cultures. Advisor’s Reflection: Tiffany, I love this chapter on our diverse world. I always learn something new each time we discuss this chapter. I like your definition of culture and agree that it’s our ethnic heritage. What was your family’s culture growing up? And do you know information about your ancestors? For example, my culture growing up in my family was to do well in school, participate in sports, and help with chores. It wasn’t my family’s culture to attend church. My parents did not go to church but they did allow me to go with my neighbors. They encouraged me to participate but did not participate themselves. And I don’t know much about the culture of my ancestors. I have never traced back my family tree nor completed an ancestry kit. I think it is good that you are comfortable working with men and women. Sometimes female workers don’t feel comfortable meeting with men but it is necessary to work with them when they are a single parent. I am glad that you have an interest in learning different cultures and I do agree that this is a way to help families overcome barriers. Thanks for sharing!
