Module Two Question 1 Describe one of the beliefs and values of the Navajo as illustrated in your readings. Ceremonial performances—which are often used in an effort to respond to ailments, both mental and physical—are experienced by members of the community and sometimes last as long as nine days. During these ceremonies, traditional sand paintings may be drawn that show characters and events from Navajo myths. Historically, Navajo spiritual leaders (who can be men or women) have led their tribes, and they have been believed to provide a connection between the people and the gods. Module Two Question 2 Describe one way in which the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the societal structure on the reservation since regaining some autonomy in the 1970's. One way the Navajo have incorporated their beliefs and values into the societal structure on the reservation since the regaining some autonomy in the 1970's was education. Education was biased in the US governed school system and teachings were based on European practices and procedures. For example, forced conversion to Christianity, and used harsh disciplinary measures. Now the Navajo children can be home schooled or sent to the reservation school. Module Two Question 3 What beliefs and values can be found in your culture? How do these beliefs and values influence your day-to-day life? Religion is big in my culture. I am Irish catholic and Brazilian roman catholic. The values and culture through Catholicism runs deep in my family and influences my day-to-day life.
