Assignment 4 Domestication The purpose of this assignment is to give students an opportunity to demonstrate that they have read the online material. The further purpose is to emphasize the importance of the relationship between subsistence, subsistence technology and social organization. Read the online material on domestication and answer the following: 1. Give 3 examples of how people change plants through domestication. They decrease the production of toxins within the plants thus preventing insects from eating the plants and making them safe to eat. Helps make it easier for humans to harvest the edible part of the plant. It makes plants easier to grow, for example drought tolerance. 2. Explain how plant domestication and food storage converge to increase sedentarism. Domestication began with hunter-gatherers who helped the plants they collected. Then through domestication, food storage becomes more important. They realized that growing domesticated plants requires much more work and time than hunting and gathering but they produce much more food. This led to giving more importance to food storage, which made a greater sedentary lifestyle necessary, since it was difficult to move food reserves that are in clay- lined pits or clay pots. The plants must be harvested all at once, so the more people harvest, the more will be harvested before the crops are damaged.
