Q1) Chimpanzees and gorillas more closely resemble each other anatomically than either resembles humans. For example, the hands of chimpanzees and gorillas are structurally similar and quite different from human hands. Genetic-distance data suggest, however, that humans and chimpanzees are more closely related to each other than either is to gorillas. Assuming that the genetic-distance data are correct, explain why we might see this anatomical similarity between chimpanzees and gorillas. (question is adapted from textbook Ch4.Q2.) We can see these anatomical similarities between chimpanzees and gorillas even though that genetic-distance exists because evolution of the human (hominid family) was way faster than the evolution between chimpanzees and gorillas. This means that there was some sequence divergence when these species developed these more neutral mutations. They are able to share these mutations because they have a functionality that benefits both of these species. Q2) Compare and contrast five differences in morphology and/or behavior between the strepsirrhine primates and the haplorhine primates. (question not from textbook) Difference #1- Strepsirrhine primates are mostly nocturnal Difference #2- Strepsirrhine primates are mostly solitary Difference #3- Some strepsirrhine primates have claws instead of nails Difference #4- Strepsirrhine primates have an acute sense of smell Difference #5- Strepsirrhine primates have wet noses Morphological Characteristics of Strepsirrhine primates: - Dental comb - Slightly smaller brain (compared to haplorhine primates) - Tapetum (the reflective layer in the back of their eyes)
