Welcome to your first discussion in SCI 100. Each discussion is meant to be a collaborative space for conversation about the course concepts and for learning from your peers' diverse perspectives. To ensure an interesting discussion, you are encouraged to think creatively about your initial posts and build upon the points made by your peers. It is also important to review the module resources and read the prompts in their entirety before participating in the discussion. Create one initial post and follow up with at least two response posts. For your initial post, address the following: 1. Introduce yourself to the class. a. What degree are you pursuing and why? b. Where do you live? c. What would you like us to know about you? 2. Discuss the value of studying the natural sciences for everyone, not just scientists. Why might it be important for individuals and society to understand the science related to current events and contemporary issues? 3. Consider a recent event, either in your personal life or in the news. In a few sentences, describe how basic knowledge of natural science could help you better understand that event, make decisions, or act. For your response posts, address the following: 1. Pick two peers who chose current events or personal experiences different from yours. Offer your own ideas about how having knowledge of natural science might affect how your peers understand the events they identified. Remember, this assignment is graded on the quality of your initial post and at least two response posts to your classmates. If you refer to any module resources, be sure to include an attribution (or citation) to the resource.
Hi everyone! My name is Melissa Sanchez; I was born in Bellflower, California but raised in Tri-Cities, Washington. I look forward to pursuing my bachelor's in environmental science. I also have my associate degree in Anthropology. Environmental science perfectly combines all the subjects I enjoy studying, including biology, physics, chemistry, and sometimes geology. I've also always loved being outside and exploring the natural world, and the fact that I can study and better understand the environment around me is very extraordinary. I also enjoy reading different genres of books in my spare time and making pottery. Finally, family is essential to me. Coming from a large Hispanic family, our motto has always been “family over everything." The study of natural science is valuable for numerous reasons. It provides knowledge that can lead to an evolution of essential scientific literacy and create a dynamic understanding of nature and everyday technology. Natural science is a science that includes understanding, predicting, and describing natural phenomena. It usually engages in exploring the physical world that we live in. For example, experiential evidence is gathered from experiments, and observations are used to conclude your hypothesis. A recent event that occurred in my region was last year in August. In the news, they were expressing the extinction of Snake River salmon in Washington State. This information was determined due to the number of dead salmon near the four dams providing energy, transportation, and irrigation services. After gathering evidence of this issue, they then in December decided to create a proposal to assess and establish plans for replacing the transportation and energy systems of four lower Snake River dams. Salmon is essential to Washington's States identity and plays a significant role in the ecosystems and economy here. Keystone species like the Pacific salmon are crucial to the health and efficiency of our ecosystems. Salmon provides food for other species in our region, and their bodies also improve the environment by transferring nutrients from the ocean to freshwater streams. Therefore, understanding natural science factually shows how the salmon will not only affect the ecosystem they live in if they do become extinct but also gather this recurring issue data and explore ways to solve our problem so we can co-exist with it.
